If you like David Sedaris, you'll like Chris Girman's "The Chili Papers"

In The Chili Papers, Chris Girman holds no restraint in creating a hilariously riotous world where mothers cover dead lawns in green spray-paint, Mexican transvestites hold poetry readings by the well, gay lawyers battle out personal grudges and grammar disputes in the softball field, and young gay men embark on new found sexual discoveries in Latin America. Reminiscent of David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day, The Chili Papers follows the fictitious life of Cory Simmons who must maintain sanity in the midst of a mother's need to live in denial, a sister's relationship with a gay cop, and an alcoholic father mistaken for his boyfriend. Mixed in between the chaos, Simmons finds escape in his writings, in his Latin American ties, and in the arms of Latino men. The Chili Papers successfully injects humor and laughter into Cory Simmons' life while commenting on the ability to thrive and rise above the family tensions and frustrations.
This is a must have book. You will laugh, cringe, laugh - again, get turned on, and laugh some more.

faux memoir ate the time away

Cory take us on a tour of his life from the time he lived with his mother to just after law school. Cory spares us little in his not quite linear, and definitely not straight, faux memoir. His adventures (Florida, DC, Texas, Latin America) and flights from his own reality allow us to meet his eccentric family, friends and acquaintances, while he self-analyzes his own actions, usually after the fact.
I enjoyed the book, read mainly during long walks on the treadmill, but somehow I was continually anticipating something bigger, better, more impressive as I turned the pages. The book did entertain, shocked at points, disgusted at others, but ultimately, it made those hours at the treadmill disappear underfoot without seeming like miles and hours. Instead, the time went by like having a comfortable evening of conversation and flirtation with Cory.
