Book Description

12 Nov 1997
Drawing on personal, historical, sociological, psychoanalytic, literary and artistic sources, this compelling book explores the tensions and contradictions implicit in notions of children and childhood. It examines how children can at once represent innocence, beauty and hope, while at the same time are neglected, disenfranchised and abused. Wide-ranging and provocative, this exploration of what 'the child' means, and has meant, to adults, will appeal to students and professionals across many disciplines, as well as to the interested general reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Gittins gem! 1 Jan 2009
By JBarker
Format:Paperback
I first discovered Diana Gittins' work through her remarkable 'Madness in its Place'. The insight it gave me into the lives of people behind the amorphous mass of mental health concepts and statistics, led me seek similar enlightenment from 'The Child in Question'. I have not been disappointed. Though the approach of this often challenging book is more wide-ranging, drawing on many different disciplines and areas of research - the end results for the reader are similar. Social constructs and assumptions about childhood are painstakingly unpicked to reveal the human stories behind the concepts, often in a very moving fashion. Thoroughly recommended.
