First-rate drama. 16 Nov 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This police drama series, which deals with the more political aspects of police work, goes from strength to strength in its second series. Tim Pigott-Smith once again gives a superb portrayal as a Chief Constable whose attempts to make the land a safer and fairer place are constantly bringing him into conflict with superiors, red tape and even his own subordinates. Episodes in this series include animal rights terrorists, a boy kidnapped by an ex-mental patient (a brilliantly unnerving performance from Roger Lloyd Pack), a housing estate where a police officer is killed by teenaged thugs and a case of pollution caused by toxic waste dumping. Gripping, solid drama.

I was an avid fan of the The Chief when it was first shown by Anglia Television back in the early 1990's. I still have video tapes of the series, and have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the DVD collection, and will view each episode consecutively when I have them all. The series takes a look at a different aspect of the police service - The Role of a Chief Constable, well-acted by Tim Piggott-Smith and later by Martin Shaw, both of whom were well casted for the role of the Chief Constable of a fictitious police force known as Eastlands. Having come from a police background, and having worked at a similar level in the Metropolitan Police, I can relate to the constant tug of politics between the Chief Constable's Office, the Home Office, Local Police Authority and the community. The series deals very well with the way The Chief Constable and his closest advisors deal with the day-to-day running of a suburban police force, including the trials and tribulations in the domestic lives of his most senior colleagues. This is a first class police drama series, which was obviously well researched and advised by ex-Chief Constable John Anderton. Unlike the Bill and many of the current police dramas, this series looks at the top of tree, and anyone remotely interested in politics in the workplace will enjoy viewing it. 5 Stars right out of the box from series 1.

Following his suspension at the close of series 1, Chief Constable John Stafford has to deal with more issues at the top of the tree including a new head of his Police Authority and domestic issues in his Assistant Chief's life.

Forging ahead like the first series, this show never fails to deliver and even 20 years on is a realistic and poignant window onto a world that was falling from the old ways and descending the slippery slope into the beaureacratic mess that is law enforcement in the UK.

The episode with the sniper is one of the best and makes it quite clear that English cops only fire as a last resort and with the utmost reluctance.

Although some of the show is unrealistic (the Chief on a stakeout or the Chief being a sniper's wingman) this is simple poetic licence and adds flavour to a show that wishes to illustrate that THIS Chief is hands on and has his scruples and moral compass pointed the right way.

Network have finally announced plans to release series 3 with Martin Shaw taking over the Chief's epaulettes, albeit with Piggot-Smith still in the chair for the first 3 episodes. Time will tell (April 2011 to be exact) if he does a good job in this series, as reviews so far have painted him as the "Chic Chief", given the role only to appeal to the lady viewers.

If you are interested in how the modern police operate check out my book Stab Proof Scarecrows.
