Book Description

8 Jan 2009
A white baby named Andy MacDuff is captured in a raid by the great Apache chief, Geronimo, adopted by the Indian leader, and raised by his youngest wife. The boy grows up such an expert hunter that he kills a black bear when he is only ten years old, and receives the name Shoz-Dijiji, the Black Bear. As he grows to young manhood he becomes an expert fighter, and falls in love with a beautiful Indian maiden named Ish-kay-nay. This is the original Argosy-Allstory Weekly pulp magazine text published in 1927.

4.0 out of 5 stars ERB in Sombre mode 28 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'd been an ERB fan for 30 years when I was hit with the mad impulse to chase down and read the handful of novels that were misssing from my old collection. This was one of them and it is a hidden treasure, along with its sequel, Apache Devil.

This is ERB in a more sombre and reflective mode, creating a realistic and at times moving portayal of the Apache point of view during the last years of Geronimo. The trademark heroism and romance is present but toned down, and the novel is stronger for it.

This a rare book and not easy to find and is a welcome addition to the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Western 6 Oct 2005
The War Chief is a great western novel. Burroughs only wrote 4 westerns -- two rather mediocre ones, and the great WAR CHIEF, which was followed by Apache Devil, its equally fine sequel. Although Burroughs is better known as the creator of Tarzan, these novels are not to be missed. They display a rare sympathy for the American Indians in the 1920's when they were written.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!!! 10 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I have looked for this book for about 30 years after reading the War Chief, which I loved as a teen. As an adult, the sequel, Apache Devil was well worth the wait. A love story, as well as a sensitive history of the Apache Nation's final days, it could hardly be better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edgar Rice Burroughs Western Story 2 Dec 2008
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I thought I was ordering a book but, instead, I received a newly published copy of a short story magazine originally published in 1928. There were complete stories as well as serials. The Edgar Rice Burroughs story, Apache Devil, was Chapter 5 of 6 chapters. However, included in the magazine were at least a dozen other short stories written by known writers. I enjoyed the surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Western 6 Oct 2005
By David Adams - Published on Amazon.com
The War Chief IS a great western novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs (the creator of Tarzan). ERB only wrote 4 westerns. However, be aware that the first edition was by A.C. McClurg in 1927. All Grosset & Dunlap editions of Burroughs are reprints.

5.0 out of 5 stars read all four of ERB's westerns! 20 Dec 2012
By Barbara Grano - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This has all the qualities of the 19011930's style western --- like Grey, Haycox, Bindloss, Sinclair. Plus, it presents a meticulously researched insight into Apache culture and their final years of freedom. It's sequel is Apache Devil, and it's a terrific read too.
