Product Description

THEY AREN'T ALL THAT PC, BUT YOU BETTER NOT GET IN THEIR WAY!

From the silly to the simply smashing, the Chicks in Chainmail are back to save us once again! Whether defending a charity ball against rapscallion pirates or taking names at a medievalist tournament in the Asteroid Belt, whether bringing a snotty loremaster to his rightful comeuppance or protecting our schoolchildren from magically-summoned barbarian invaders, whether weekending in the woods to get in touch with their Inner Warrior or showing giant reptiles that Tokyo's not gonna take it anymore, these female fighters will always have what it takes.

So what are you waiting for? Pick up your male -- er, mail!

I happened on this book by chance - there was just one copy on the shelf. The title, with its clever double pun, intrigued me. The synopsis made me chuckle...and then I read it.
The stories aren't all funny, but the ones that are - notably "Sweet Charity", "With The Knight Male" and "Troll By Jury" - are hysterical!
"Sweet Charity" in particular is an excellent example of the I-Like-A-Girl-With-Spirit mistake men often make in sword & sorcery tales; having dispatched all but one of a band of pirates, one of our Chicks, Krystal, faces the last one...And yet the Chicks aren't stereotypes. They're not just feminised versions of men; they're real women. They worry about their kids, the change of life and whether they look good in this or that gown. Nor are the men they face the usual wimps you tend to get in 'women warrior' tales, who'd never dream of raising a sword or even a hand to a lady...'cause in THESE tales, that'd be the last mistake they ever made!

Buy it. You'll love it. Providing you can leave all sense of political correctness at the door. :)

ideal xmas gift 20 Jan 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
i bought this present for a recent acquaintance, and she seems pleased; it's a very good book, a collection of short stories demonstrating that feminists do not need to be humourless, and with a high, and dexterously-plotted, quotient of action; highly recommended!

Addicting . . . but in a good way 10 Oct 2000
By Stephanie Zuercher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I've been reading this series since the original "Chicks in Chainmail", and they're all wonderful, addicting. Here's the thing: they've almost gotten so that you have to read them in order. Several stories in this won't make as much sense unless you know the setup -- especially the Ladies' Aid and Armor Society one and the one about Riva Konneva et al.

I won't say this is a terrible thing. You really should read them all. (In other words, this is a great book, but not the place to start.)

That said, the stories in here are witty beyond belief. They've stereotyped the stereotype. They've also exploded the stereotype. There's nothing the authors leave sacred involving the Xena-type warrior, the hulking male barbarian, what REALLY happened in fairy tales . . .

My favorite story out of this bunch has to be "The Case of Prince Charming". It's obviously a rewrite of the fairy tale, but the extras thrown into it, and the pun in the title, make it wonderfully amusing.

In summation: get the other ones first, but DON'T FORGET THIS ONE!

New book about us chicks 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The chicks are back and as good as ever. If you liked the first three books in the series, you will like this one. Many of our favorites are back including the Ladies' arms and auxiliary, our contract fighter turned writer on Paper-Pushers. Additionally, there are many new contributors, including a very funny and true short poem to lead off the collection. And, don't miss the author's bios which are written in a style nearly as humorous as the stories.

The Chick Is in the Mail 3 Mar 2006

Very funny continuation in the "Chicks In Chainmail" series. These are short stories sending up the heroic fantasy genre, all with female protagonists, and many written from a feminine perspective.

OK well - Jonathan Ross has made a decent fist of entering the comic universe - which celebrity can't you wait for to enter the fray with their own graphic novel, and er, if you like, what would it be about ? 1 1 day ago
