Wallington Neale is not looking forward to another week working at Chestermarke's bank, "once more faced by the fact that a week of dull, uninteresting work lay before him." However his week is enlivened by the disappearance of John Horbury, the liked and trusted bank manager. The Chestermarke cousins who own the bank seem strangely reluctant to call in the police. Eventually New Scotland Yard in the form of Sergeant Starmidge becomes involved.
This book is a slow starter and only really warms up towards the end when the Sergeant's investigation leads him to London. Nevertheless fans of old fashioned detective stories will be quite happy to spend a couple of hours with this book.

The Thoughts of an avid reader Annetter31 17 April 2005

Format:Hardcover
This is quite and interesting book. It was published in 1923. The setting is 1912 England. I really like the old use of wording in these books . The plot brings to mind mystery writer of an earlier period such as Sherlock Holms. We begin with a quaint little village in England and the employees in a small bank.It starts out a little boring but quickly turns into a complicated affair when the bank manager turns up missing. Scotland Yard is called in and things quickly become very complicated. I enjoyed the plot development and the way the author kept us in suspense until the very end. It becomes a page turner mystery. You will not want to put it down.

How delightful and, unfortunately, rare to read a book written in perfect English - the language is a delight even though obviously outdated. The characters were well developed, the story intriguing and retained my interest throughout. This was my introduction to the author and I look forward to enjoying more of his work.
