I bought this hoping to get a reference book of cheese that I would see in the UK and Europe. Although this does cover the big European cheeses it is written by a Californian and therefore aimed at the USA.
It is still a good book and very interesting and well laid out. It is missing a few of the smaller British cheeses that I was hoping to see.
Buy it if you are USA based.
If you are UK based consider getting an alternative first.

Good book, however missing some cheeses including Swedish Vasterbotten cheese (I know- very picky!).

Ignore the naysayers 27 Sept. 2007
By The Bee Bee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I don't understand the negativity. The other review reads more like something you'd hear from a jealous competing writer or publisher rather than a reader--which makes me very suspicious of his/her motives.

I, on the other hand, found The Cheese Lover's Companion to be factual, thorough, and written in a very engaging manner. I know cheese (but am always eager to learn more), and I feel the level of detail in this book is spot-on (and the production quality is fine). If you love cheese, I think you would find this title an indispensable part of your library. Highly recommended!

The indispensable companion for cheese 6 Oct. 2007
By Foodie From Maryland - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is comprehensive and easy to use and should be indispensable for cheese lovers. It is full of information, and the "dictionary" structure means that the user doesn't need to know the answer before starting the search. The writing is crisp and informative, and the price is great. This book belongs, with Food Lover's Companion, on the shelf in the kitchen for the cookbooks and reference books that actually and repeatedly get used.

The Cheese Lovers Companion 16 April 2008
By Tony Marotto - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Book is exactly what I expected it to be. Specific information about cheese's of the world and a description of how they're made, what they taste like, and what foods they best accompany. I now bring it with me to cheese stores so that if I see something I think I would like, I look it up and make the decision as to whether I buy it or not.

No frills cheese guide 24 May 2014
By Sarah J. Iozzio - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This guide has some great information provided in a compact format, however it is by no means comprehensive. For example, there are entries for some of the Point Reyes cheeses, but not Bay Blue. Flor De Escueva doesn't have an entry. Some cheeses, like cheddar, are presented broadly without tasting notes for the huge variety of cheddars available on the market. It can be confusing trying to find an entry because the entries aren't listed consistently, so you have to hunt around before determining if that cheese was just overlooked. I'd recommend this for casual cover-to-cover study rather than as a quick reference. I think I'd give it 4 stars if it at least had pictures.

Does its job 7 Nov. 2013
By A. Kat - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
While it does its job--being an encyclopedia on cheeses--I wish it had a little more oomph to it. It doesn't make me hungry for cheese. However, if you're using it as a guide on the road, it would fit inside a purse well and is rather inconspicuous. You can look up cheeses without the cheese snobs noticing. Maybe.
