Holly O'Neill knows that every charm bracelet tells a story.

Many years ago she was sent one with just a single charm attached. The charms have been appearing ever since, often at challenging times, as if her mysterious benefactor knows exactly when she needs a little magic in her life.

As a result, Holly's bracelet is her most prized possession. So when she finds someone else's charm bracelet, she feels she has to try to reunite it with its owner. Even if the only clues she has to follow are the charms themselves.

On a search that will take her all over New York City at Christmas, Holly becomes ever more determined to piece together the details of this other charmed life. But what she doesn't know is that her quest may also lead her somewhere she never, ever expected . . .

3.0 out of 5 stars Like an old romantic movie 7 July 2012
By elsie purdon TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is a story that reads like an old black and white movie. Full of handsome men and beautiful women that could easily be old time film stars. There are lots of well known New York locations with a dash of Florence, Italy, for that extra romantic touch!
Beautiful Hollie, single parent to Danny age 10 , is very happy in her job working at a shop The Secret Closet where she sells beautiful vintage clothing. It is in the sorting through a recently donated Chanel jacket that a silver charm bracelet is found in a secret pocket.
Carole the shop owner and Hollie decide to try and find out if the bracelet is missed and who the owner is.
This search makes the story. While we get to know other characters in the book it is soon predictable what way things will develop.
The writing is good, though the story is for me over romantic. it is a enjoyable light read. Plus I did like the message throughout that following your dream matters more than earning pots of money.
There is a twist to the ending that I didn't see coming, which adds a little flourish to the finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle and Enjoyable Story 7 May 2012
By Brett H TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Charm bracelet is a relatively gentle tale, which gets stronger as it progresses. Holly, who works in a vintage clothing shop, discovers a charm bracelet in the pocket of a jacket which has been sent to them to sell. It is similar to one she owns herself, but since each charm represents a significant event in life, it appears the owner of this one has lived a much longer and fuller life than Holly since there are so many charms on it as compared with hers.

Holly realises that the owner of the bracelet must be distraught at having lost it and sets out to find her. Since each charm has its own unique story behind it, there are plenty of clues to work with. Interspersed with the main story are sections of flashbacks which describe the circumstances in which charms were acquired, either by Holly or by the owner of the stray bracelet.

This is an interesting scenario to craft a story around, and this book does work well on several levels. The quest to reunite bracelet and owner is a mystery in its way and builds as clues are investigated and followed to the next hint. It is an interesting study of people, particularly of Holly and her son, Danny, both of which we come to know quite well as the book progresses. There is also a fair measure of romance, and although the eventual outcome is fairly clear from about the halfway point, I did not feel this spoiled this tale in any way.

I thought the ending of the book was really well done and quite subtle. It would have been so easy for the author to have finished off in a much more obvious and clumsy fashion, but clearly a lot of thought went into this. The Charm Bracelet does take a while to get going and for the building blocks of the story to be put in place, but this is one of those books which increases in intensity as it progresses and at the end I looked back on a story which I certainly enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect holiday read 23 July 2012
By Welsh Annie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
One of the one-liners selling this one was "It's perfect froth for whiling away a few hours on the sun lounger" - I really couldn't put it any better. If you read "Something from Tiffany's" there aren't any surprises here - the same likeable kind of characters, the search, the misunderstandings, the boy meets girl story taking a while to come to fruition... I'm making it sound like I didn't like it, but I really did. Melissa Hill writes fluently and easily, a cut above a lot of other chick lit, and there's enough that's different about this book to make it stand out from the pack. I loved the vintage clothes store setting, Holly's imaginings about each piece of clothing, Greg's career change + the obnoxious girlfriend, and the excellently engineered ending. It leaves you with a nice warm feeling - and it's a perfect holiday read.
