Quotes for Neptune Crossing:

One of the best SF novels of the year — Science Fiction Chronicle

"Jeff Carver is a hard sf writer who gets it right—his science and his people are equally convincing... from a chilling look at alien machine intelligence, to cutting-edge chaos theory, to the pangs of finite humans in the face of the infinite. If you like intriguing ideas delivered in an exciting plot, this is your meat." —Gregory Benford

"Masterfully captures the joy of exploration." — Publishers Weekly

"Reveals an alien encounter brushing hard against a soul, and takes us from there to the far reaches of the cosmos, all with the sure touch of a writer who knows his science. Jeff Carver has done it again!" —David Brin

For Strange Attractors:

"A dazzling, thrilling, innovative space opera...probably Carver's best effort to date."
—Kirkus Reviews

"An irresistibly readable story line reinforced by fascinating speculative science. Readers who come this far will be hooked for the series' duration."
—Booklist

"Carver's latest novel showcases his own fertile imagination and his talent for creating a host of engagingly sympathetic characters."
—Library Journal

"Carver is at his rousing best in this wild ride into the heart of an enigmatic world beyond the Milky Way. This is science fiction out at the frontier. Maybe beyond the frontier."
—Jack McDevitt

For The Infinite Sea:

"Another splendid adventure, with intriguing puzzles, first-rate problem-solving, and an impressive array of alien characters, motives, and methods."
—Kirkus Reviews

"An absolutely terrific book. Carver is heir apparent to Larry Niven as the king of hard SF: his stories revolve around ideas that are every bit as big as Niven's, and his aliens are every bit as fascinating. Chaos theory says outcomes are unpredictable, but here's one that's a sure thing: if you start reading The Infinite Sea, you won't be able to put it down until the very last page."
—Robert J. Sawyer

I'm always on the lookout for long Science Fiction stories, especially of the Space Opera genre so it was good to find this trilogy in one Kindle download and almost within my target Kindle purchase limit of five pounds. This is a long read and with sufficient ideas to keep this reader happy. The sample is pretty long too but doesn't get to the point where the story really gets going.

The writing quality isn't Hamilton or Reynolds, you're not going to need the online dictionary, but the pace and ideas kept me interested. Not literature then but the structure and characterisations had me involved.

It's not entirely space opera either, events take place in a limited number of locations. In books two and three, the locations are fixed for the entire book but they are in distant 'worlds'.

Yes a fast, easy read and I'll be looking out for the fourth instalment when it is published for the Kindle and is £5 or less.

Terrific, imaginative series! 23 Jan 2011

I found all three books in this collection absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable. Carver's descriptive language is breathtaking--I feel like I'm discovering completely new worlds, and the characters are great. I got wrapped up in the ongoing story and abandoned most of my responsibilities and sleep until I read every last book. I know he's got a fourth in the series; I can't wait!

Fun Space Opera 9 Mar 2011

I've read these three books in paperback, I'm a bit slow moving into reading the modern way, but anyway... The stories are a great space romp, starting on a moon of Neptune then spanning the galaxy. The aliens are not too anthropomorphic, I mean really pretty alien, with alien motives not humans desires in a rubber-space-mask motivation. Good read, should be on all scifi kindles.
It started out so well ... what happened? 18 Mar 2012

OK, I bit ... I downloaded the free first book, Neptune Crossing, and truly enjoyed it. Strong characters, interesting setting, plausible plot (within the bounds of sci-fi, of course). If I had stopped there, I would have rated it a 4+. I didn't know it was a cliff-hanger, so I bit and bought the trilogy for $6.99. Turns out the free first book was worth $6.99, the other two, not a nickel. Shame on the author for turning the series into "Buck Rogers and his Merry Gang of Aliens from the Bar Scene in the first Star Wars movie Bomb Around the Universe with No Rhyme or Reason". He justifies this approach by saying that while some authors develop a plot outline, have a clue where the book will go, etc, etc, he's going to just let the characters and plot develop. In other words, "I'm just gonna wing it as I write." ... and it shows. Really, save your money on this one.
