5.0 out of 5 stars In the presence of aliens 29 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Compulsively readable, the Chanur series is one of the few evocations of Clausewitz's dictum about war and politics that has been effectively translated into science fiction terms. This may seem OTT for what is basically a space opera, but the political, racial and economic imperatives of the alien races are always present and the author doesn't let the narrative obscure the deeply mysterious nature of dealing with others from totally different backgrounds.

You can read these on several levels, but the basic joy of a fast-moving, literate and intelligent piece of writing in a field full of schlock is hard to overestimate.

The Chanur starfaring clan, like all the Hani, are new to space, but Pyanfar's street smarts keeps what is basically a space-going tramp steamer solvent and afloat; she captains her craft through the murky and difficult spaceways with the pizzazz of a New York cabbie. But she is wise enough to grow and prosper in a turbulent time.

If you love strange worlds, buy it. If you love the heart of science fiction, buy it. If you love cats, buy it.

If you have difficulty with strange words or decent writing, then don't buy it; borrow it and learn to read like a human being - you never know, an appreciation of the English language may tell you more than you think...

4.0 out of 5 stars Are humans really so alien? 1 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
C.J. Cherryh is an author who I keep coming back to again and again, not because she is particularly exciting or enthralling or engaging. The word I'd use is *reliable*, because no matter what, she composes a darn good tale, and hard as her novels are to read on occasion, (her "spacer" terms and references, for example) you will always be satisfied that your time was well-spent.

Thus with this trilogy, though I don't quite figure why the publisher omitted the rivetting conclusion, "Chanur's Homecoming," in favour of the stand-alone "Pride of Chanur". The Hani, for anyone who has read "Downbelow Station" or its ilk, become in this series more human than the humans themselves, represented by the lone Tully, who comes across as a very strange person indeed. In fact, if Tully is any indication of what evolution has in store for us, I'd rather regress back to the Dark Ages. But the hani - cat-like beings who eat sandwiches, wear earrings and swear constantly (and all this before meeting humans!) - draw you into their culture and their lives so deeply that you hope that the first extraterrestrial life we encounter is something like them.

I'm putting words in your mouth and giving you no plotline. Just read this. Review it. And encourage more people to do the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Chanur Saga 28 April 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I just loved the quirky nature of the crew and their varied traits. I hadn't read a book where the aliens were all individuals who had their own alienness and at the same time very human qualities. A very enjoyable read but you do have to have a bit of a brain to understand the intricacies of the politics and the trade.

Pyanfar is a strong woman (hani) who captains the family ship, deals with foreign traders and is just trying to keep out of debt. Trouble finds her and she just has to find a way to survive. One of my favorites. This author also has over 60 other titles to her name and I recommend all of them.
