I think this gives a very good account of the occupation of the Channel Islands. Having lived in Guernsey I met many people, including my mother in law, who had lived through the occupation. I was told story's which were basically about the good the bad and the human race which is what comes across in the film.
I was pleased that John Nettles looked at the conduct of the Islands Governments in the context of 1940 and not todays. But I was disappointed though that he did not use the context of 1945 to judge the British Governments conduct after the liberation. To hark back to the events of 1940 to explain this ignores the fact that Britain had been through five terrible years of war and even though the war had finished, in Europe that is, the war in the East hadn't, was facing immense problems.
I think he has been swayed by his Jersey friends who like most of today's Channel Islanders only see the war in the context of what happened there in the Channel Islands. That is why I gave it only four stars instead of five.
