There is no agreed and settled history of the German Occupation of the Channel Islands and the subject still arouses a great deal of passion and indeed anger. What did go on in those years? Was there widespread collaboration? Did the civilian authorities actively help the Germans to round up Jews? Was there any resistance in the Islands and, if so, who were the resistors? And why did Britain abandon the Islands so completely to their fate and in such strange circumstances? Actor John Nettles, who became famous for his portrayal of Jersey detective Jim Bergerac and Tom Barnaby in Midsomer Murders is the writer and presenter of this fascinating three-part documentary. These programmes attempt to answer some of these questions by using archive film footage, talking to the historians, expert in this subject and most importantly by letting the survivors of that awful time speak for themselves which they do most eloquently. The story that emerges is complex, heart-rending and enthralling. It is the story of ordinary people many of whom became extraordinary as they lived through the harsh and bitter years of the German Occupation.

Fair and honest 27 Nov 2010
By Tony B
For a student of the Ocupation history, or those that have been glued to 'Island's At War' (!) this is a must have. It has to be the most fair and honest set of interviews ever carried out on the subject. There is no moralising, just people who know what happned speacking freely and unselfconciusley on the subject. The still thorny and in some case, still used hurtfully, question of collaberation and co-operation with the German force's (I'm still not that politicaly correct to call them 'Occupying powers) is aired in a way I've never seen before outside the Islands. As is the courage and spirt of those who were taken and never returned. A Duth friend remarked that you'd never get away with being so honest and balanced in the Netherlands still. Another good reason for us Crapaud's to buy it. The Donkeys hate it!

I think this gives a very good account of the occupation of the Channel Islands. Having lived in Guernsey I met many people, including my mother in law, who had lived through the occupation. I was told story's which were basically about the good the bad and the human race which is what comes across in the film.

I was pleased that John Nettles looked at the conduct of the Islands Governments in the context of 1940 and not todays. But I was disappointed though that he did not use the context of 1945 to judge the British Governments conduct after the liberation. To hark back to the events of 1940 to explain this ignores the fact that Britain had been through five terrible years of war and even though the war had finished, in Europe that is, the war in the East hadn't, was facing immense problems.

I think he has been swayed by his Jersey friends who like most of today's Channel Islanders only see the war in the context of what happened there in the Channel Islands. That is why I gave it only four stars instead of five.
