Product Description

When push comes to shove, the animal inside awakes….

It's a primeval instinct and everyone has an animal inside...you just have to find it.

When the images in the mirror start to move, there is no more time to dream. For twelve year old Peter Badger, the dream about finding his missing father has already become a nightmare.

Pushed into a world which transforms when the sun goes down, where the reflection in the water is that of an animal, Peter struggles to stay human while containing the animal spirit. Out in the wild, where deadly creatures and elemental demons roam, where two enlightened races are at war, Peter discovers his ability to transform into a powerful badger. Caught between the races, he and his Changeling friends, Michelle Hawk and Paul Otter, have to decide which side to take.

The Changelings must face the Rumanni King, who will stop at nothing to gain the Changelings’ power. Unfortunately for them, the casually murderous ruler might also be responsible for the disappearance of Peter’s father...

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine fantasy in the making 19 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Changeling is the first in a projected six-book fantasy firmly rooted in the tradition of Tolkein and thus with a far longer history stretching back to traditional epics like The Odyssey, the Norse myths, Beowulf and, here most importantly, the Mahabharata. The story echoes much Hindu mythology and tradition even though its guise is western. Peter is pulled from his own world into a parallel universe in which he has the power of shapeshifting into a badger. He meets Paul, who can change into an otter and Michelle, whose metamorphosis is into a hawk. Peter's immediate quest is to find his missing father but we soon find that the network of evil the three have to conquer is far greater than that. The first book is exciting, action-packed and suspenseful. The author's ambitions for the sequence are plainly huge: there is a lot to live up to in the next five books. But this is a confident and intriguing start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed & Mystic 8 Oct 2011
By K Singh
Format:Hardcover
This is a story which camouflages Indian mythology amongst the popular genre of fantasy adventure making it a very unique idea. It moves fast to keep the reader locked onto what is going to happen next, for me that's what a fantasy adventure story is all about. It certainly serves as a children's story but also caters for any adult who wishes to escape and be a part of a magical action packed mission, I mean who wouldn't want to be able to turn into an animal and use it's power in battle!

Lathar has proved himself as a fantasy adventure writer by showing the thrill of fear and embracing a challenge, bring on book two!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Read 29 July 2011
By Scones
Format:Kindle Edition
Your typical fantasy scenario: preteen child wakes up in mirror reality and discovers they have ultra-cool powers. In this case, transformation. However, Lathar here picks up on a darker aesthetic and transforms this typical tale into a riveting nightmare.

There's a constant undercurrent of something deeper, something unexplained going on in the book. The world Peter and his friends embrace is far from friendly and unthinkable in how antagonistic it is. That is enough to grip a reader and pull them through until the bitter end, and a climatic finale.

As debut novels go, this has its fair share of flaws. The characters can be slightly derivitave at times, especially in regard to Peter's 'uncles' and 'aunt', however, there is enough enjoyable content in this novel to make it well worthwhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Changeling 20 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This book is totally awesome!!.A real belter of a book, with a real sense of realism , even within this fanatasy world of a boy who becomes a badger. The narative and the story telling is so descriptive, and so believable, it's easy to imagine that this is real. K D Lathar clearly has a natural talent for writing childrens fantasty adventures, and with this, his first ever publsished book, the first of a series of 6 books, this potentially could be the start of something big for this author. He has just been signed by a major publisher, and there is talk of a film in the pipeline.I am sure this will be a huge success.Watch out for this!!
