Review

Endlich keeps her treatment balanced and brilliantly pulls together the common threads and motivations of these profiled philanthropists .[T]his heartening book proves that even the most successful individuals in business can also devote themselves to something that touched them so profoundly that they could not turn away. --Publishers Weekly

Product Description

A former Goldman Sachs trader and author of the widely praised "Goldman Sachs: A Culture of Success", Lisa Endlich knows everyone who's anyone in the world of philanthropy. Now, we venture inside that world with her as she interviews the top names in philanthropy today: Melinda Gates, one of the driving forces behind the largest philanthropic organization in the world, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Bob and Suzanne Wright - he's the former Vice-Chairman of GE and longtime head of NBC Universal, their Autism Speaks has become the number 1 autism organization worldwide; Bill Donaldson, former head of the SEC; Charles Best and Peter Bloom, the Chairman and CEO of the highly successful organization Donors Choose; Connie Duckworth, the former Goldman Sachs executive who left her coveted Wall Street job to start a not-for-profit rug merchant that focuses on providing employment to impoverished Afghan women and children; and, Anonymous - arguably the leading anonymous donor today, who's given away millions in secret. She also interviews: Bernie and Tim Marquez, CEO of Venoco oil; Philip and Donna Berber, former CEO of CyBerCorp; Tim Dibble, Private Equity, Year Up; Peter Bloom, partner, Atlantic private equity, chairman of Donorschoose. org; and, Paul Tudor Jones, founder of Tudor Investments and the Robin Hood Foundation. Endlich's widely praised skills (Goldman Sachs garned uniform accolades from the media) and unmatchable connections in philanthropy result in a book that's a terrific combination of engaging, smart writing and engrossing interviews.

fabulous read 20 Jan 2009
Format:Hardcover
Beautifully written and fascinating account of a varied group of philanthropists. Each tells their own story of how they got to start giving and what they do now. Very inspiring to read about people with money who really do want to make a difference and not just hoard their wealth. Very enjoyable thanks to Lisa Endlich's insightful questions.

Everyone will learn from this beautifully crafted book! 12 Feb 2009

Lisa Endlich writes and interviews with great insight and sensitivity. This is much more than a book about giving financial gifts; it has lessons on giving of self. It is the perfect read in a miserable economy, actually.
Very inspiring 8 July 2010

I loved this book. As someone thinking of starting my own NGO, this book was not only inspiring but had plenty of very real-world examples of problems others faced and how they solved them that anyone considering entering this space will learn from. The book is easy to read, well-written although occasionally a tad too repetitive for my taste.
A Great Guide for the Novice and Experienced Philanthropist 30 Nov 2009
By J. Janssen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Lisa Endlich does a great job in sharing the evolution of many philanthropists and their giving. She interviews many wealthy philanthropists (Melinda Gates, Peter Bloom, Johann Olav Koss) who have dedicated their lives to a variety of causes. You get to see how their giving and organizations evolve and become more sophisticated as they learn from experience.

The book uses an interview format with several engaging questions that reveal the insights and motivations of the philanthropists. By the end of each interview, you really get a sense for the origin of the philanthropists' cause, how they have given strategically, and what motivates them to continue.

The only drawback of the book is that the interviews are primarily with those with several million dollars to give - only the wealthiest top 1% of the population. Thus, it makes it hard for the middle class or even the millionaire to relate in some ways.

Still many of the principles that drive the giving are the same - whether you are in a position to donate $10, $1,000, or 10 million.

Overall, this book is fantastic for those who are so moved to give to the world and want to do so in more sophisticated way that truly resonates with their values and purpose.

Thanks Lisa for this wonderful resource!
