A rather secretive group of high-minded and high-placed intellectuals, which names itself Inver Brass, decides to do away with J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI, in a bid to recover and shred his secret files. During execution half of the files are found to be missing. Rather unfortunate this because the files contain lots of information people would prefer to remain secret.

As the new owner of the files starts using them, Inver Brass decides to bring in thriller writer Peter Chancellor and have him investigate the whole affair by way of researching a book. Mr. Chancellor of course doesn't know that he is being used, but eventually figures this out. The story culminates in him finding the culprit who stole the files.

This is classic Robert Ludlum with plenty of plots and sub-plots. I picked up this book and read it in one go. I just couldn't put it down. It is a real joy to follow Peter Chancellor in his quest of unearthing the mystery surrounding the files.

...For those of you unfamiliar with the author he excels at realistic thrillers usually based around shadowy networks of power and corruption, i.e. this bloke makes the X-files look tame when it comes to conspiracy theories.
There is more to his books than that though the pace is breakneck and the prose always addictive, this one particularly so, in fact I was forced to read this over the course of a week due to work and social commitments and I found myself getting withdrawal symptoms.
What singles this book out from his other tomes (check out the Bourne series its fantastic) is the plot twists, I love a good twist but I hate to be patronized, the twist has to be believable and plausible while at the same time a complete and utter shock. Not only does Ludlum manage this he manages to pack in twist after twist and they never lose their plausibility nor do they become contrived.
All in all if you want to spend a weekend totally blocking out the world or just need some random escapism, run the bath, light the candles, put on Miles Davis and read this book.

Great conspiracy theory novel. Usual Ludlum plot interweaving several threads in an escalating drama. No doubt there are numerous other scenarios which he could choose.
