Raised beds require far less digging, so the soil won't get compacted. It can solve the problem of poor draining or waterlogged soil. Moisture retaining and free draining soil gives the ideal conditions for plants and vegetables to grow on without being checked.
If the area around the bed has a weed membrane laid down with bark or gravel on top, it will form a barrier to stop slugs and snails from getting into the bed, and since the soil will have no eggs in it, you will be starting you pest control straight away. Any slug pellets needed can be spread around the outside of the bed, and so not be touching any growing plants.
