Product Description

Product Description

The brilliant new novel in the internationally renowned Sister Fidelma crime series by Peter Tremayne.

Ireland AD 670. When an eminent scholar is found murdered in his cell in the abbey of Lios Mór, fear spreads among his brethren; his door was secured from the inside, with no other means of exit. How did the murderer escape? And what was the content of the manuscripts apparently stolen from the scholar's room? Abbot Iarnla insists on sending for Sister Fidelma and her companion Brother Eadulf to investigate the killing. But even before they reach the abbey walls, there is an attempt on their lives. As the mystery deepens, Fidelma and Eadulf must also wrestle with problems of their own, which threaten to separate them for ever...

Its been interesting over the years to watch the development of Sister Fidelma and Tremaynes general adherance to strict chronological order in the books has helped this. Tremayne is one of those academics who have made extensive use of their academic research to create wonderfully detailed and evocative books. In Tremayne's writing probably more than any other author of historical mystery fiction you feel an the overwhelming delight of his descriptions of life in 7th Century Ireland and it's legal and sociological systems of governance, he really brings the era to life.

This could have been just a run of the mill murder in a locked room mystery but Tremaynes writing and evocative prose elevates the story to the point where you care about the characters, you become immersed in the day to day processes of investigation and I find myself having read one of his books from cover to cover without a break. His writing is never run of the mill.

I have his books on pre-order from the moment they're announced and I'm never disappointed. This was another excellent foray into the 7th Century and I can't wait for the next.

Tremayne is truly a master of detective stories. Every time I open a new novel of his Sister Fidelma series, I make sure my mobile is switched off and there are no important things to do in the next few hours, because I already know that putting down the book will be next to impossible. And every time it meets my best expectations. Besides, Tremayne's historical knowledge and description of the ancient Irish world is fascinating. His stories are a perfect and rare combination of entertainment and learning. I am really looking forward to reading his next book.
