Product Description

"The Chain Garden is more than a straightforward romance; it is also a study into the nature of guilt and the effect it can have over the human mind and heart. Jane Jackson’s novel is satisfying on many levels, well-written and pleasurable to read." Historical Novels Review

The linked circular beds of the chain garden, bright with summer colour, present a charming picture – unless you understand the coded language of flowers.

Guilt-ridden at the number of men dying in her father's mine, Grace Dameral works hard to help the village's bereaved families while caring for her frail mother and preparing for her brothers' homecoming.

The arrival of Edwin Philpotts, a former missionary, ignites a dramatic sequence of events that lay bare long-buries secrets. But why has Edwin returned to Cornwall, and how will Grace respond to his shocking confession?

5.0 out of 5 stars Cornish family saga 5 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Set in Cornwall, this novel follows the dynamics of a family struggling to come to terms with their individual pasts. All the characters are well drawn and their problems completely believable, especially Grace, whose story this is. The chain garden is the device which pulls all the stories together as we follow Gace and her breakdown and eventual recovery. Edwin, the man she loves, and her brother Bryce both carry secrets they are afraid to reveal to anyone but it is only when they are honest about these that they can move ahead and find happiness, while Henry, by keeping his secrets to himself, causes ruin and unhappiness.

Very well written and a fascinating picture of life in a Cornish village at the turn of the 20th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars romatic Intrigue 30 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is Grace's story about how she overcomes many difficluties and eventually finds happiness with Edwin, a preacher with a secret. The title refers to a coded message of flowers that Grace's mother planted. As I have learnt to expect from this author, the story is extremely well researched with superb attention to detail. This makes it entirely believable, and as the setting is over 100 years ago, the novel is and will be timeless, to be enjoyed by future readers for many years.
What I liked about the story were the characters that gave it depth as well as breadth. For example, there are two plant-hunting brothers, Richard, who falls in love with Sophie, daughter of the Colonel who funded their expedition, and Bryce, a homosexual who goes abroad again to escape prison and to continue his collecting (and love) activities. Edwin witnessed a colleague commit a crime and is riddled with guilt, almost as if he'd done it himself. He confesses to Grace who forgives him and they marry.
This review cannot possibly do the story justice. To find out how good it is, you'll have to read it yourselves.
