Product Description

The famous club-waving figure of the Cerne Giant stands on a chalk hillside in the heart of Dorset. The Giant is a paradox; a secretive exposer, famous for his brash nudity, yet surrounded by mystery. How long has he been with us ?: Who is he ? When and why was he made ? By whom ? The final answers to these questions are to be found in this lively and comprehensive account, which sets the Giant's biography firmly into its natural context, the history of Dorset. Full of drawings, sketches and photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars He is Hercules or Heracles 19 Mar 2014
Not sure why this book has no revues as it's very neo-pagan subject lends it to such...can only revue from memory and say that the author seems to conclude with some archaological detectivism that the image is actually Hercules with a cape or lion skin and a head in the left hand and goes into some detail about the exaggerated phallic length of the figure and the mistakes in unearthing and upkeeping the true shape and dimensions of what is after all,a traditional image simply and originally cut into chalky earth...well worth a read as these imposant chalk figures forsaw the later trendy giant earthwork sculpts and images of the twentieth and twenty first centuries, being the posters of earlier ages, easily as monumental as the reliefs of earlier millenia, some of which are still to be seen today, like the Uffington horse.A good read indeed.
