This book has it all: design principles, 'making' techniques and inspiration in bucket loads. It encourages careful thought and a very practical approach to planning and design, whilst not for one minute forgetting that ceramic art's greatest attraction is in the fun of getting your hands on clay and making, making, making! Lovely photos, and a lots of ideas for making your own ideas come to life. Great for anyone who is pursuing a ceramics qualification as it explains all the stuff you need to know about primary and secondary sources and how to develop mood boards, sketch books, etc. Inspirational and helpfully practical. A lovely book.

THIS WELL WRITTEN WELL ILLUSTRATED BOOK CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ART, THE THINKING ,PRINCIPALS AND PRACTICE AND SKILL NEEDED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL STUDENT OF CERAMICS. tHE BOOK IS WELL LAID OUT, THE SECTIONS ARE VERY CLEAR AND WELLCHOSEN.THE ILLUSTRATIONS AND PICTURES CLEARLY DEFINE THE TEXT AND ADD QUIALITY TO THE DEPTH OF THE TEXT.THIS IS A 'MUST' FOR THE SERIOUS CERAMICS STUDENT AND A VERY ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR THE EDUCATORS

Not sure! 30 Nov 2010
By Sarah
I think it depends whether you are a design student or into hobby ceramics/pottery. For me, it is just a hobby and therefore I found this book confusing, technical and a bit beyond me! The book is not easy to read and I just flicked through it and put it on the bookshelf and that is where it has remained. I can see that if you are a design student this book would be more relevant as there is sections on mood boards, concept, development of ideas, presentation of work etc but for your average hobby enthusiast (or at least for me) this is not really relevant.
