Product Description

Style, practicality and the mystery of the Celtic spirit combine to make this collection of 25 knitwear designs. The patterns are based on Celtic motifs and have been designed for both men and women. Based on three distinctive knitting styles - Fair Isles, Fisher Gansy and Aran - the sweaters are loose fitting and range from a casual oversize key jacket to a diamond and crosses style. Alice Starmore is the author of "Sweaters for Men" and "The Fair Isle Knitting Handbook".

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Designs 18 April 2004
By A Customer
My reaction to reading this book, after the euphoria of actually obtaining an Alice Starmore, was to try and choose a favourite design from nearly all of them and anticipate starting it. Alas, most of the yarn is discontinued and there are so many colours in some of the designs that try as I might I could not match them to any currently available yarn. Some of the designs use fewer colours and could be attempted but the more detailed ones remain a distant yearning. I am glad I bought this book but very glad to have now realised that one might be very disappointed to pay the amount of money that some of the out of print Alice Starmore's command only to find it nearly impossible to recreate the designs.
I highly recommend this book, and if you have a stack of shade cards and a good magnifying glass you might be able to swatch up something similar. Otherwise, be content to approximate or stick to the designs with a few shades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book in ok condition 20 July 2009
By Katri
I was very happy to get this book second-hand, since it is out of print and unavailable almost everywhere else. And it is beautiful. Not only the patterns are gorgeous, the photography is lovely as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless gorgeous knits 28 Jan 2002
This was my first Alice Starmore knitting book. And it is unmatched by all other designers or knitting books. It made me buy another five of her books. The celtic collection is a compilation of one colour to thirty colour sweaters all of them timeless patterns. I have knitted the first one 10 years ago, and it is still a breathtaker. The collection includes sweaters for the whole family (children and adults). Patterns are for advanced beginners to real professionals. Beautiful fotos show the sweaters of various angles as well as details. It is no wonder that this book hasn`t gone out of print the last ten years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be Inspired! 24 Sep 2011
This is a really good book full of inspiring designs for a twist on traditional fairisle knitting. The designs are charted and once you get the hang of reading charts, you will find these much easier to follow than a written pattern. The designs range from fairly simple to those more challenging. However, I would say that this book is not aimed at a beginner to fairisle knitting. You need to be able to knit on circular needles. The yarn recommended tends to be from the author's own site. Although the yarn is superb, it is very expensive. You can substitute these for good quality yarns ( 100% wool is the best) at 4ply, double knitting and aran weights. I would not recommend using acrylic yarns for these patterns as the wool needs to be able to 'stick' to itself. All in all a beautiful book and the patterns will give an experienced knitter some lovely inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful designs 24 Aug 2013
By C. Cole
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The book is absolutely inspirational with amazing colour patterns and Celtic stitch patterns. Because of the era the book is from, designs are quite oversized so you may have to alter this if you want a modern silhouette /fit. Or you could use the patterns to swatch. But even as a coffee table book it is gorgeous.
