Product Description

James Yorkston, an artist not unfamiliar with the notion of collaboration, has opened the studio doors to a broad and brilliant selection of players on this his eighth studio album.

Produced by Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor in London's Livingston studio, it features KT Tunstall, The Pictish Trail, Rob Smoughton, Fimber Bravo, and his long-term collaborators Jon Thorne and Emma Smith. The Cellardyke Recording And Wassailing Society' finds James at his most personal and reflective following 2012's I Was A Cat From A Book.

What James and his collection of fine musicians have created is an album that connects the intimacy of his home-town life with the camaraderie of good friends. 'Cellardyke..' flows with acceptance and relief, and is James' fullest body of work.

This is in my view the very best piece of work that James Yorkston has put his name to. 'Moving up Country' is a terrific album which I would also give 5 stars to; but let me say - if that gets the full 5 stars, then this must have 6.

I love everything about this album including the artwork. The lyrics are eccentric and interesting - even if they don't make sense (to me, yet). But that is one of the things that I like about this. The lyrics are so rich in imagery and intrigue that there is a vivid picture painted as you listen to James and his excellent collaborators deliver their strokes onto the awesome musical canvas provided by the instruments. There is a gritty and at times emotional edge to the singing and the harmonies that is as powerful to the songs as the beautifully arranged instruments.

The song 'Feather's are falling' contains a violin solo on a that is just mesmerising That is worth the price on it's own and that's the other great thing about this work - it feels like extra lengths have been gone to in order to provide a musical backdrop to these wonderfully written songs that is deserving of the levels we are talking here in terms of musical creativity. There are contributions to the music from instruments that you would not come to expect in the majority of musical arrangements, but what has been produced here is bonafide piece musical brilliance. It's almost like they are showing off - but having such a deep musical talent pool to draw from, you'll excuse them for splashing around a tiny bit.

If I had never heard any James Yorkston music and listened to only this I wouldn't know what genre to put it in. It isn't pop or thrash metal that is for sure, but to me this transcends even needing to define it.

It is a wonderful record in my view at all sorts of different levels. I find I look forward to , and enjoy, all 16 of the songs whereas normally I would flick forward to miss out some. The music is very rich and, at some points, arresting. The narrative is strong and written by someone whose views you have to respect.. You can enjoy it as a gentle background to whatever you are working at or you can listen to the words and laugh or cry depending on the song. Great for long journeys.

Big fan of Jame s- great live, great first 3 or 4 albums, but in my opinion down hill from there. This has Hot Chip producing and some fine guests - but is just Dull.
