Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic buy! 12 Jan 2006
Format:Audio CD
Firstly, this is available to buy now, I bought it from a US shop just before New years eve through the Amazon "used and new" option under the Amazon list price.
The box set is beautifully presented, and, as someone who has been after these shows for a long time, these CDs are well worth the wait!
The sound quality is amazing, yes the mix is different to the Live Evil version of the live bits used, but it isn't that different.
I've had Live Evil for a long time now and it has burned itself into my DNA, the biggest thrill of this box set is hearing the music as it was played without the editing that appeared on Live Evil. It completes the picture, so to speak, of what was played at the Cellar Door run.
I would recommend this set to anyone who loves Live Evil, and if you haven't heard Live Evil, yet like the electric era Miles (or are new to both), buy with confidence!

5.0 out of 5 stars What I Say 30 Oct 2005
Format:Audio CD
Six sets of Miles at The Cellar Door in Washington DC, December 16-19, 1970. Miles joined by Gary Bartz, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Michael Henderson and Airto Moreira. This was recorded to gather material for what became Live Evil. After the first three nights John McLaughlin was invited to join and features on the last two discs.

The band without McLaughlin are superb, very musical, some suprisingly delicate moments as well as the expected intense stuff. Great to hear the progression through the six sets as the band gets more muscular, the funk gets funkier, the rock becomes overt, building up until Jack can take no more and let's rip with a huge drum solo on disc five. McLaughlin's contribution is mixed. The band play much harder with him around but there isn't much for him to add. He doesn't sound like an integrated and essential part of the music being created but his presence audibly inspires Miles and Jack to some supreme moments.

Miles is on fire throughout, Keith struggles manfully with electricity, Bartz is a revelation, Airto makes lots of funny noises, Jack has a whale of a time, Henderson makes it funky.

Like the Jack Johnson box what at first might seem to be an unnecessarily bloated set becomes an essential document of Miles' particular genius. It does drag a bit at times and with such a limited repertoire you might wish for some material with slightly more substance than Honky Tonk or What I Say, but overall there is an insane amount of first rate Miles to savour in this box.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Need For Apprehension 29 Dec 2008
By Cornish Deadhead TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having received this box for Christmas, I was a little uncertain of the music it contained, particilarly with the number of repeated tracks. However, this being my 10th Miles Davis box set with none of the others disappointing, I should have had no reservations! The music contained on these performances is exciting, vibrant and fresh. Whilst I know that some of it has been available for a long time, it amaizes me that it took so long for these recording to surface. This sets links so well between the Jack Johnson and On The Corner sets. The fact that this set was recorded only 5 years after the stunning Plugged Nickel box demonstrates the most phenomenal progression. It might not be to everyone's taste, but for me having Keith Jarrett on the sessions is the icing on the cake.
