Biography

The last time most of us saw Doves it was Glastonbury Festival 2003, headlining Sunday night against Moby. This wasn’t really a problem for them though. The year before, they’d been mid afternoon, playing in glorious weather, a crowd of people wide-eyed at the prospect of whole weekend opening up in front of them to the soundtrack of Catch The Sun. On the Sunday night, under the cover of a million… Read more in Amazon's Doves Store

Although many people cite tracks such as 'Pounding' and 'There Goes the Fear' as the breakthrough tracks for Doves, the truth is I was lucky enough to hear this track on a CD borrowed from a friend. Eerie, mysterious, beautiful and tuneful, this song showed me what a quality act they were, and their debut album is certainly more of the same stuff. Beginning with the keyboards of Marin Rebelski, the track quickly moves into gear, picking up pace so quickly that by the time you hear Jimi's voice you are blissfully unaware 2 minutes of soulful guitar work have passed. A solid beat and the bridge bring you up to what must be personally one of my favourite choruses ever. Tuneful without being cringeful, infectious without being poppy, it picks you up and lifts you away, and immediately drops you back down into the perfectly pitched main guitar solo. What I also like about this track is the repeated chorus. Normally if you see a track that goes on for nearly 8 minutes, you may be tempted to skip, but 'The Cedar Room' is its own boss, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot bring yourself to skip it. The ardour of the backing vocals (male and female) work in harmony with one another, and as Jimi fades out - 'the cedar roooooom'- you have been taken on a journey. And 8 minutes have somehow gone with the wind....
