Product Description

Product Description

A brilliant novel about the discovery of a fragment of a prehistoric cave painting that leads back to an episode of tragedy and heroism in WWII - and to the creation of the painting itself, 17,000 years ago. A piece of prehistoric stone art from the same period as the famous Lascaux cave paintings - 17,000 years ago - is brought to a London auction house by the son of a British hero of world War II, whose father left it to him. A storm of publicity ensues, which is only increased by the disappearance of the painting. Even the President of France becomes involved. As the story moves to France, both the tale of the stone's discovery, during the War, and its origins, millennia ago, are told in this wonderful novel which evokes both THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR and Ken Follett's THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Anyone holidaying in the prehistoric caves region of South West France should pack this book. Not only is it a terrific read but it gives a colour and an easily digested historical background to the region that isn't supplied by the guide books. Walker is the author of the newly launched Bruno Chief of Police series, lighter reads also set in the area Bruno, Chief of Police.

An excellent read, combining little known facts about the story of the resistance during ww2, imaginative creation of a period of prehistory and a modern mystery

A bit dull 21 April 2010

I really struggled with this book. I think Walker is still finding his style - and Bruno Prince of Detectives is by no means flawless - but golly this was dull.

I think the problem was Walker trying to interweave three lots of stories - including that of some early man troglodytes - in with a WWII and modern story. For me, it just didn't work. I couldn't sustain any interest in the troglodytes.

It may be me - I am glad others enjoyed it - but this one wasn't much fun.

I'm looking forward to the next Bruno, though.

(In case you've got a strange curiosity like mine, the tags Amazon suggested included "boring, highly recommended, crime, couscous, ex pat".)
