The Catholic Guide to Depression, by Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, MD is a clear, concise and comprehensive presentation on the disorder we call depression, the study of psychology, the practice of modern psychiatry, and what the Church teaches about the dignity of the human person.
With equal respect for the world of science and the world of faith, and the proper role of each, Dr. Kheriaty offers, real insight, based on years of experience gained from his clinical practice and his work forming the next generation of doctors as Director of Residency Training and Medical Education at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
As a committed Catholic, and as a family member of someone who has experienced this disorder, I can say that I have found this book to be very helpful in validating much of my own experience and that of my loved one.
Perhaps most encouraging is the profound sense of humility with which Dr. Kheriaty approaches this subject. He is someone keenly aware of the awesome power of the God who creates us and the individual needs of each human person made in His image and likeness. This alone makes this book worth adding to your personal library, but most important is the sense of hope that the reader receives from this work. Dr. Kheriaty clearly demonstrates that a God powerful enough to create us, is also merciful enough to create the means by which to ease our suffering.
I highly recommend it.
