The stories display the human side of the late war years. There is no glamor, no guns blazing, no heroic lives or deaths. It offers insight into the human soul.

Human feelings and relations in the context of WWII in Japan 13 Dec. 2013
By Voyageur - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Deeply felt short stories about Japanese civilian or military characters caught in the difficulties or horrors (re: nuclear bombing of Hiroshima) faced towards the end or shortly after WWII.

Human feelings and relations are displayed in a factual, restrained fashion, with the background of anxiety or suffering in WWII war, or post war context, with touches of poetry.

The four stories, in chronological order, are by renowned Japanese writers: Tamiki Hara ("Summer Flower"), Haruo Umezaki ("Sakurajima"), Fumiko Hayashi ("Bones") and by the Nobel prize Kenzaburo Oe ("The Catch"), with a short but very well written introduction by Shoichi Saeki on each story and writer.

Note: this book was published earlier by the same editor under the title "The Shadow of Sunrise". This new publication has been given the title of one of the four stories, "The Catch" ("Shiiku") by Kenzaburo Oe, which has also been made twice into a film respectively by Nagisa Oshima in 1961 and by Rithy Panh in 2011 (the latter adapted to the context of the Vietnam-Cambodia war, shot in Cambodia and titled in French "Gibier d'Elevage" (i.e. "Farm raised game").
