Product Description

This is the story of young Lucas who gets a most precious present for his birthday, a black kitten which he calls Night. Lucas becomes very attached to Night but one day Lucas comes home from school and discovers that his beloved cat has disappeared. He is desperate and no one is able to console him. He searches for Night everywhere and doesn't stop hoping for his return. It's only sometime later that Night appears in his dreams and tells him that he had to leave to see the world, just as Lucas will do one day when he has grown up.

A wise, gentle and moving story unlike anything Mankell has ever written.

There's something lovely and relaxing about this book's easy-pace and slightly old-fashioned depiction of the simplicity of childhood, where the reader really feel as if s/he is in the mind of a funny and lovable seven-year old. Lukas is delighted to get a cat for his seventh birthday but the cat goes missing and the story covers the loss of his much-loved pet, and the way this charming little lad copes with it and moves on. Obviously, therefore, there is an inherent sadness throughout but it is covered with sensitivity and good humour so the feel of the story is consistently light-hearted and gently amusing. Although this book would be particularly apt for children who have lost a cat or other pet, it will touch a chord with everyone, and is suitable for the most sensitive child, from age 5 or 6.
And if you enjoy this, as I am sure you will, then try David Henry Wilson: Triple Trouble with Jeremy James for the same childhood humour or Philippa Pearce: A Dog So Small for more wishful thinking and vivid imaginary animal scenarios.

Well written book without doubt. But how miserable. Children read books for escapism, not to be inflicted with the miseries that become reality in later life. This is not a children's book.

A charming story for children 9 April 2012
By Z Hayes - Published on Amazon.com
Thanks to our local library, my daughter and I have enjoyed several playaways which are basically all-in-one audiobooks. All one needs is a triple A battery and one is set to go. At our local library, patrons are expected to supply their own batteries and headphones (the latter because of hygiene concerns). They are really small and inconspicuous so that it makes it convenient to slip into a backpack, or bring it along on car trips. My daughter likes listening to the playaway children series at night while she is lying in bed waiting to fall asleep. Although it is an all-in-one audiobook, the playaway can also be heard via a CD player with the use of an adapter.

The operation of the playaway is simple - one just plugs in earphones, speakers, or a car adapter into the provided jack; press the POWER button, press the play button, and listen! There is a keypad which allows the listener to do one of the following: equalizer, Power button, speed button (choice of 5 speeds), turning volume up, turning volume down, LCD screen which indicates the status and how much battery power is left, reverse button for chapters, play/pause button, and forward chapter button.

The Cat Who Liked Rain is a lovely story for young children. It explores the bond between a young boy Lukas and his cat, Night. Recommended for children ages 6-10.
