This film has courted some very negative reviews from people who feel that the film deviated too much from the original book and delivered something too coarse for a young audience. Those concerns are justified, and I would understand that a big fan of the book would feel that what they are seeing on screen is not reflective of the story they have enjoyed.

I do like the Dr Seuss book, but I'm not a die-hard fan - I do remember it from my younger days, but only the general gist of it rather than the full story. Maybe this is why my views on the film are less harsh than many others.

Mike Myers gives a very energetic performance of The Cat in The Hat and seems to understand the role well. There is a lot of over-acting which is required for the larger-than-life character, but he also captures the more understated nuances as well. Other than Alec Baldwin who is maybe a bit wooden (and I tend to think looks like he should be in pantomime) all the other roles are well performed and fit in nicely with the film.

The most impressive aspect of the film are the visuals. Although this is a live action film (which also makes use of CGI) it manages to look quite cartoony due to the incredibly vibrant blocks of colour. Because of the unique look of the film it seems to take place in its own universe, it creates a unique world in which you accept all the crazy happenings rather than looking plainly ridiculous. The book can be read in minutes whereas this film runs for nearly an hour and a half, therefore artistic license has been taken and it's probably best to think of this as a film inspired by the book rather a film of the book per se.

I used to love cat in the hat books as a child, and had the video, so I decided to purchase it on dvd so I can still watch it. Very funny, and my niece loves it!

I rented this movie earlier in the year and it was watchable yet coulourful. Some of the jokes were funny, especially the one about the babysitter but I wasn't too keen on the "Dirty hoe" pun.

It was strange seeing Mike Myers dressed up as a cat but he did have a very good lead role. There are some downsides with this film such as some of it that isn't like the book and the children's over the top screaming when they first saw the Cat.

There are some good parts in this film such as the purple liquid down a slide and the animated versions of the Universal and Dreamworks logos. The part that is most like the book is when the Cat and some others enter the house with a special cleaning machine.

If there was a rating out of 10, I'd give this film a 7, otherwise I give it a 3/5.

"You do realise of course, that the films in this category though watched by me, are bought for and watched by my grandchildren aged 5, 3 and 1. I do of course watch them when I'm visiting. These ratings are based information received from my daughter and son in law, together with my own thoughts. Things that are taken into account include a) ' the quiet factor or did it keep them quiet' b) ' the attention span or did it capture their attention’. Both a) and b) are similar but the latter category may involve laughter and numerous questions and comments throughout the movie. Both categories however, are time related inasmuch as ' for how long' has a definite bearing. Other factors involved with the ratings given, also include c) The number of repeat viewings that we get, often immediately after they've watched it for the first time and d) their comments regarding the film and whether or not it wins critical acclaim with the award of that much sought after “Munchkin Thumbs Up ". I must admit of course that with the help of my adorable grandchildren, I have entered in that wonderful realm of ' The Second Childhood ' and loving every minute of it! This review will be repeated for all films intended for my grandchildren. Look out for the “Grandad Buttons Solid Gold Award ". Films that enter this category must include not only the aforementioned factors a) to d), but must also have a good storyline, acting and direction. “In other words they must have that “wow factor “!

This film has persisted as our family all-time favourite for three years now and I am only ordering a new one because we lost the original on holiday and some days its the only dvd that we can all agree on to watch (my kids are now 6 and 8). As other reviewers have mentioned it would be fair to say that the script and plot only really reference the original books (which both our kids also love), but the one-liners which Mike Myers (the Cat) comes out with are utterly hilarious and if the kids are watching, my husband and I always want to sneak a peek too. I think it has something for all ages, but agree with one reviewer that some young children might find some things a bit perilous, although is ultimately a happy ending. I am sorry that this film never became as popular as all our family feel it should have been. When we talk to other families almost no one has seen it or even heard of it. Perhaps the mistake was to call it the Cat in the Hat, as I guess is would attract fans of the books which are altogether more docile and well behaved. This is a riotous, messy, irreverential film about a broken family with a single working mum, who push their angst to the limit before finding that they all really love each other and that things are ok if they stick together. Not such a bad moral in the end.... and lots of laughs along the way - give it a go!
