I was given 3500 Years of the Cat In Art for a birthday present. I only mention this because it's not the sort of book I'd have thought of buying myself, so it was a delightful surprise to discover how good it was. I thought I'd probably just flick through it, because the illustrations are certainly beautiful, but there's a really interesting introduction that discusses the cat in its historical and cultural context and made me keen to read the rest of the text as well as admire the pictures. Subsequent chapters don't just take you on a trot through the history of the cat in art, they focus on themes such as The Comic Cat, The Portrait Cat and The Eastern Cat.
Obviously cat fanatics will love it, and cat AND art obsessives will have a ball - but I'm neither so I really recommend it to the more general reader too.

The Quintessential Book of the Cat in Fine Art

The Cat 3500 Years of the Cat in Art by Caroline Bugler will be treasured by anyone with an interest in Fine Art and a love of cats. It contains a rich and comprehensive selection of works of art about cats or including cats, all reproduced exquisitely in vivid color in large full page illustrations. The book is broken up into sections such as The Portrait Cat or The Legendary Cat. Each section has an opening text about the history and lore of the cat as well as the relevant aspects of the cat's personality which sets the reader up for the art which is to follow. Each work of art comes with a capsule description containing much helpful information about the artist and the work itself. The text throughout is always interesting and easy to understand. You do not need a college course in Art to totally enjoy this book.
Most of the artwork in this book is Western Art but I was delighted to find that the author has also included many beautiful works of art from other parts of the world as well. My favorite section is The Eastern Cat which contains a stunning selection of artwork from Japan, China, and India. Elsewhere in the book there is a lovely sculpture from Iran of a cat. The section The Big Cat includes works from Mexico, Peru and the Middle-East.
This is a perfect book to learn about cats and to learn about Art and should be in the collection of anyone with an interest in either.
