"Lloyd Alexander is the true High King of fantasy" Garth Nix" --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

This is a new edition of the third book of the classic Newbury award winning epic fantasy series full of action, humour, valour and excitement. The time has come for Eilonwy, Princess of the Royal House of Llyr, to become a lady, although she would much rather be seeking adventures with assistant pig-keeper Taran. Will Taran lose Eilonwy to the arms of the feeble Prince Rhun or worse still to the clutches of the evil enhantress Achren? Along with his faithful companions, Taran must negotiate the lair of the giant cat Llyan and the cavern of the King of Stones in his quest to win her back. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Part three of the Prydain Chronicles is to my opinion the most funny in the series. It centres around the Princess Eilonwy who must go and learn to be a lady and will have to face the powers of her magical heritage. When she is abducted, her loyal friends including Taran, Gurgi, Fflewddur and Gwydion begin a quest to her rescue which means a lot of fun and adventure. "The Castle of Llyr" also deals with Taran's feelings concerning Eilonwy, for the Princess is about to be betrothed with Prince Rhun of Mona, a young man who means well, but is horribly clumsy. In this trilling adventure Taran fears to loose not only Eilonwy's freedom, but also her heart. A wonderful story!

Princess Eilonwy is growing up fast and Dallben has decided that she needs to learn how to behave like a lady. To this end she has been sent to the Isle of Mona to stay with King Rhuddlum, Queen Teleria and their bumbling son Prince Rhum. Whilst there she is kidnapped by the evil enchantress Achren - and so Taran, Fflewddur Fflam, Gurgi, and Prince Rhum set off to rescue her.

This is my favourite of the first three books in the Chronicles of Prydain. Assistant Pig-Keeper Taran has has grown up from the boy looking for adventure that he was in the first book and in this story struggles to come to terms with the fact that he feels more than simple friendship towards Eilonwy. The initially bumbling and incompetent Prince Rhum turns out to have more of the qualities of a Prince than even he himself believes and the supporting cast of Prince Gwydion, Fflewddur Fflam and Gurgi, once again continue to prove their bravery and heroism.

Overall: 5 stars - I really am growing to love the characters in these stories. This book is the third and best so far in this wonderful series for children and adults alike. Highly recommended indeed.

The third book of the Prydain chronicles, the Castle of Llyr introduces a new character, Eilonwy, a strong headed young girl that almost get the better of Taran. He has never met anyone so stubborn and they constantly get on each other's nerves as they flee from the castle and the evil Arachne.
But will a princess want to travel with a mere pig keeper's boy?

Alexander's books are marvellous and he creates his own fantasy style, long since established in the hearts and minds of us fantasy lovers.
