I'm surprised to be writing the first review here as Mahjoub's book has been around for 6 years, but it appears to have been kept a closely guarded secret! Quite why, I struggle to understand: it's a beautifully written tale of scientific exploration and human curiosity. Set mostly in the 16th century at a time when scientific thought is battling against prescribed thinking, it's quickly apparent that the experiences of the escaped slave Rashid in 16th century Denmark are not so different to those faced by many today in today's world. A thought-provoking allegory of ignorance and bigotry, it's alarming to think we haven't moved on that much since the enlightenment...
I look forward to reading more of his work.
