Product Description

Meet Carrie Bradshaw before ‘Sex and the City!’

The Carrie Diaries is the coming-of-age story of one of the most iconic characters of our generation.

Before Sex and the City, Carrie Bradshaw was a small town girl who knew she wanted more. She's ready for real life to start, but first she must navigate her senior year of high school. Up until now, Carrie and her friends have been inseparable. Then Sebastian Kydd comes into the picture, and a friend's betrayal makes her question everything.
With an unforgettable cast of characters, The Carrie Diaries is the story of how a regular girl learns to think for herself, and evolves into a sharp, insightful writer. Readers will learn about her family background, how she found her writing voice, and the indelible impression her early friendships and relationships left on her. Through adventures both audacious and poignant, we'll see what brings Carrie to her beloved New York City, where her new life begins.

Okay, in order to read this book, there are a few rules.

Firstly, forget everything about that we learnt about Carrie's life pre SATC from the show. This includes the absent father, the losing of virginity on a pool table and Jeremy Conway. Yes, I love the show as much as anyone, but if you're constantly comparing the two (book and series) you'll be disappointed.

Secondly, forget about the Carrie from the original BOOK Sex and the City, because frankly, she's not as nice as SJP's CB, nor this teenage one in The Carrie Diaries.

Okay, still with me?

Carrie Bradshaw is seventeen years old and ready to start her life. Unfortunately, various inconvieniencies keep getting in the way. She has to complete senior year of high school, her friend's seem to be growing apart, and Sebastian Kydd arrives in Castlebury.

What I loved about this book was the fact that there is no direct references to future Carrie. After all, she's still growing up and finding things out for herself - she's not become 'Carrie Bradshaw' yet. However, there are obviously hints to the person she is - the trouble with guys, the love of fashion, the loyalty in her friendships. It's all there. You can see how she grew up from dreaming of becoming a writer in New York to actually achieving it.

This is for teens, but I think fans of the show will enjoy it, as long as they don't get too upset about the changes in plot. What's great about Candace Bushnell is that it's like she's still at high school. Everything that teenagers worry about in their life is there - the frustration of basically just exisiting, the waiting to actually do something with your life, the concerns and worries that we all had(or have had).

The teenage Carrie Bradshaw is, after all, a teenager. She's smart and clever, bt she does make mistakes, and she doesn't always act perfectly. But that's good, because it reminds us that she is an 'every-girl'.

This book is very funny, and without being smug, very understanding of teenage life. I for one, loved it (the ending is just PERFECT, and I can't wait for the sequel, due out summer 2011) and there are several comments that had me laughing and relating to Carrie, as well as her friends.

Read it, see what you think There will be some who hate it because it's not like the show. But there will also be some who love it for showing Carrie's journey from ambitious teenager to New York girl.

I'm most definatly in the latter camp.

The Cover is Pretty 18 Aug 2011

As a true SATC ( Sex and the City Fan) I love everything about the shows, books and films, so I was excited when it came out.

I read it in one night.

It is what you would expect. It is Carrie growing up as a teenager and true to the title it was like reading a teenage girls diary - so I guess that was executed well.

I actually drooled over the book cover as it brought out my girly side as an adult woman. The handbag is a raised 3D style on the front of the hardback.

I liked the ending. Of course, that will not be revealed.

I am yet to buy the prequel now, unless I can convince someone to buy it me as a present..

As a dedicated reader of Young Adult fiction and former Sex and The City viewer, I picked up The Carrie Diaries with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Call me cynical, but YA is huge right now, and despite the fact I couldn't wait to read Carrie's story I was the tiniest bit wary of Bushnell's decision to resurrect her most famous adult chicklit character for a teen audience. As I opened that shiny gold cover and peered inside, I found myself wondering... Could a Sex And The City prequel really work as a YA title?

Well, actually, yes. This is undoubtedly a book with real crossover appeal, but the focus here is definitely YA in essence. There's much in Carrie's journey that will speak to teenage readers who have never even seen an episode of SATC or read the original novel of the same name. It's a coming of age story, and though this Carrie is recognisable as the name-necklace wearing, shoe-loving writer and romantic we know and love from the TV show, she's also a believable teenage protagonist with an honest and winsome voice. At the same time, adult readers who don't usually venture into YA territory are sure to be charmed by the eighties nostalgia and the universal highs and lows of first love.

We join Carrie Bradshaw in her senior year of high school, as she manages to attract the attentions of two very different boys: Sebastian, who makes her weak at the knees but isn't what you'd call reliable, and Brown scholar George, who is as supportive as can be but just a little on the dull side. Although I found certain aspects of the romance a bit predictable, and most readers will spot the core betrayal coming a mile off, it absolutely works as backstory for a girl who will one day consider her most trusted friends to be her family. There's heartbreak, there's self-doubt, and ultimately there's an empowering ending. Don't expect anything deep or ground-breaking, but do expect a solid chicklit offering with a truly likeable lead.

I read a lot of YA, but as I read The Carrie Diaries I realised just how few books in this category explore the mixed emotions that, for many of us, accompany the knowledge that our school days are about to come to an end. Carrie's longing to move to New York and become a writer - and her anxieties about whether she really can achieve her aims - are as integral to this story as the romance, and it's refreshing to read. There's also a real sense that Carrie is growing up during the second wave of feminism, and coming to her own conclusions about the lessons she should take from that. In keeping with the tone of the novel, the exploration of these themes is pretty light-hearted, but readers will appreciate the authenticity that they add to the romantic plot.

The Carrie Diaries is an engaging and wryly humorous story of a small-town girl dreaming of a future in the big city. It's a book about the importance of staying true to yourself, and following your dreams. I couldn't put it down. It's everything a reader could ask for in a YA chick lit title, and fans of the genre will adore it.

Carrie Diaries
As a 25 year old, this book was too young for me. As a Sex and the City fan did give an insight into the young Carrie, worth a look for any SATC fans.
