Product Description

Review

"... this book is well worth more than a glance!"
Barts & the London Chronicle – 2000

"This book is exactly what it says it is. Each topic is well illustrated with a simple but informative diagram. The text is clear and concise, but with more than enough detail. Case studies with useful questions (and answers) are also included. Good value for money."

Sphincter, Liverpool Medical Students′ Gazette

"...it does offer clinical students a thorough revision of really important topics essential for understanding the heart and circulation. The union of the basic facts with a clinical picture is maintained, and the book oozes suitability for students in the early years of the new undergraduate medical curriculum.

Student BMJ

"This book assumes no prior knowledge and would be a very useful first year purchase...Basically I think that this is a very good book for the first three years, its usefulness for the fourth year cardiovascular block remains to be evaluated, but I′ll find out within the next few weeks."

Leech y Gelen, University of Wales College of Medicine

From the Back Cover

The Cardiovascular System at a Glance is a concise and accessible systems–based textbook. Updated throughout, the second edition uses an integrated approach to take the reader through the basic anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and clinical aspects of the cardiovascular system. Following the classic double–page spread format of the At a Glance series, each double page presents clear, memorable diagrams that illustrate essential information with accompanying text that covers key topics in more detail.

The text progresses from basic science to clinical application: a general introduction to the cardiovascular system is followed by anatomy and histology; blood and body fluids; biochemistry and excitation–contraction coupling; form and function; integration and regulation; and pathology and therapeutics. Four clinical case studies at the end of the book reinforce the integrated systems–based approach to this subject. Additionally, two new chapters covering Revascularisation as well as Emerging Concepts and Treatments have been included.

The second edition of The Cardiovascular System at a Glance is an ideal resource for medical students, whilst students of other health professions and specialist cardiology nurses will also find it invaluable. Examination candidates who need an authoritative yet concise guide to the cardiovascular system will find it extremely useful. This book has been designed to fit into the budget and reading time of busy students, and is recommended as primary or supplementary reading for a lecture–based course, and/or as a book for revision prior to examinations.

I found this book brilliant as both a text book and a revision aid, the diagrams are clear and easy to understand. The text, although brief covers all the points that you need to know. I recommend it to anyone.

Format: Paperback
This text is ideal as introduction to a very complex and expansive area of biomedical science. It addresses all the complexities of the cardiovascular system, breaking it down to understandable chunks of key information. It's unlikely to prove useful for anyone beyond their first or second year of medical studies, a more comprehensive text will be needed. However, for those who have just started their medical studies it is an invaluable resource delivering the essentials when the abundance of information available often seems overwhelming. The only criticism is that some terms that are well used are not always explained, hence not the full five stars. If your course is systems based, this is essential reading.

All other medical revision books opt for bullet points, short phrases, which aim to just remind you of what you should have remembered. However, this book is fantastic, it not only helps you revise but also TEACHES you what you need to know thoroughly. The detail they have managed to squeeze is amazing...this is one book that has saved me one too many times!
