Product Description

Enoch Arnold Bennett (May 27, 1867-March 27, 1931). He was born in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, one of six towns in the area known as the Potteries where many of his novels were set.

About the Author

Arnold Bennett is famous for his realistic novels about the Five Towns - the 'Five Towns' being the pottery towns of his youth. His virtuosity as a writer was his manner of depicting simple things and ordinary people in an intriguing way for the readers. He has a warm and kind understanding for his characters, particularly when describing the intricate details of their dreary routine lives. (Enoch) Arnold Bennett was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in 1867. Arnold followed his father into the legal profession but at the age of 21, he decided to leave his father's firm and moved to London and worked as a solicitor's clerk. He won a literary competition in ""Tit Bits"" magazine in 1889 and in 1893 became assistant editor of the journal, Woman. He published his first essentially autobiographical novel The Man from the North in 1898. His best work is contained in his novels of the 'Five Towns' which include Anna of the Five Towns (1902), The Old Wives' Tale (1908), Clayhanger (1910), The Card (1911), Hilda Lessways (1911) and These Twain (1916). During the First World War, he became Director of Propaganda at the War Ministry. He refused a knighthood in 1918. In 1926, he began writing an influential weekly article on books for the Evening Standard newspaper. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Del Boy! But lucky... 17 Aug 2010
By Shivari VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a funny, loveable book that I re-read frequently, and it never fails to cheer me up. The lead character, Denry Machin, moves through life - love, business and local politics - with immense verve, wit and chutzpah. Think of him as a kind of Del Boy Trotter, perhaps, but one on whom Lady Luck always shines.

I won't spoil the plot by revealing anything. But I simply *must* say one thing. The scene between Denry and Ruth at Llandudno station is one of the best comic moments in any book ever. Not belly-laugh comedy, but the sheer dazzling wit contained in one single word. Yes, one word. If you're intrigued by that, then buy the book and discover this classic for yourself.

I came to this book through the Alec Guiness film of the book. I have to say that the book is much better than the film. I found myself quite liking Denry Machin, and I can see how the character was made into a card.

I suspect that a great deal of thought was put into the various schemes that were outlined in the book because they all seemed to be quite plausible. I could see them working, and I could see the pitfalls that Denry invariably fell into. What I particularly liked was the way in which Denry shared his good fortune, but only to the right amount.

The book is written well. This is such an attraction when I seem to have read such poorly written books recently. My only complaint is that the book isn't long enough. The author leaves us wanting more, but, alas, more is not to be had.

The Card revives all human emotions, laughter, tears, understanding, appreciation of our rich language ... it has novel themes as well as traditional ones.
The only fault is that this edition has a few typos which should have been picked up by a proofreader. They were irritating to me but might not have been picked up by everyone - I'm a pedant. But that's only the edition, the story is a classic which will live for very many years.
