Del Boy! But lucky... 17 Aug 2010
By Shivari VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is a funny, loveable book that I re-read frequently, and it never fails to cheer me up. The lead character, Denry Machin, moves through life - love, business and local politics - with immense verve, wit and chutzpah. Think of him as a kind of Del Boy Trotter, perhaps, but one on whom Lady Luck always shines.

I won't spoil the plot by revealing anything. But I simply *must* say one thing. The scene between Denry and Ruth at Llandudno station is one of the best comic moments in any book ever. Not belly-laugh comedy, but the sheer dazzling wit contained in one single word. Yes, one word. If you're intrigued by that, then buy the book and discover this classic for yourself.

I came to this book through the Alec Guiness film of the book. I have to say that the book is much better than the film. I found myself quite liking Denry Machin, and I can see how the character was made into a card.

I suspect that a great deal of thought was put into the various schemes that were outlined in the book because they all seemed to be quite plausible. I could see them working, and I could see the pitfalls that Denry invariably fell into. What I particularly liked was the way in which Denry shared his good fortune, but only to the right amount.

The book is written well. This is such an attraction when I seem to have read such poorly written books recently. My only complaint is that the book isn't long enough. The author leaves us wanting more, but, alas, more is not to be had.

The Card revives all human emotions, laughter, tears, understanding, appreciation of our rich language ... it has novel themes as well as traditional ones.
The only fault is that this edition has a few typos which should have been picked up by a proofreader. They were irritating to me but might not have been picked up by everyone - I'm a pedant. But that's only the edition, the story is a classic which will live for very many years.
