Product Description

When the South Star liner Queen Adelaide sails from Tilbury bound for Australia, Captain Albert Ebbs is a happy man. After years in cargo vessels, he has finally been given command of a luxury liner, promoted from the tramp steamers he s been used to. Although he is a thoroughly competent sailor ready to take charge of such a ship, he is less prepared for the social duties the new position involves, not least the way he becomes the target for all the comely unattached women on board. To top it off, his Chief Purser is doing a roaring trade in smuggling the ship s supplies. What s a man to do?

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: A typical light comedy based on a novel by Richard Gordon, The Captain's Table has director Jack Lee at its own helm, riding high on the success of his 1956 A Town Like Alice. Captain Ebbs (John Gregson) brings a part of his freighter experience with him as he takes charge of an ocean liner for the first time. He soon finds that the tactics that worked on the freighter do not work here, though his crew could use some discipline. His purser has sticky fingers, his chief officer has a roving eye, and the steward has his own problems. And then there are passengers like the secret heiress, the charming widow, the temptress, the would-be novelist, and the offensive VIP. Eventually, the captain catches on to the nuances of his new role, confident that he and the "Love Boat" can weather any storm. ...The Captain's Table ( Shenanigans )

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun 19 Mar 2011

Not quite as good as some of the "Carry On" films, the film is packed with well-known actors of the day.

John Gregson is absolutely right for the part of the newly-promoted captain, who is completely out of his league in the world of cruises. He lacks the social graces and refinement expected of him, as well as the appreciation of diplomacy. His crew, also, seem determined to undermine him at every opportunity and some of the passengers are somewhat too "feisty".

It is a fun film; not particularly noteworthy, but fun, nevertheless. I wouldn't mind having a cruise with John Gregson as the captain; I think I'd probably enjoy watching all the mishaps!! Just remember to check the champagne; it may be "just like cider with a French accent" ("Carry On Cruising").

4.0 out of 5 stars Good British comedy. 14 May 2013

Another of those nice comedies the British studios used to do so well. Great cast, nice print and a great cast full of familiar faces.

5.0 out of 5 stars all at SEA ! 11 Jan 2012

I was given this book as a present round about 1960 - and only recently found out there was a film! I've still got the buke - annit's still read periodically - and now I've got the film which is just as funny.
Excellently cast with John Gregson as Captain Ebbs, Reginald Beckwith as Burtweed (Captain's Tiger) and Donald Sinden as Shawe-Wilson (Chief Officer). Richard Wattis is an admirable (wrong word - he's the most dishonest bloke aboard!) Chief Purser Prittlewell. The story is simply that of a basically naive and honest Tramp Skipper who is sent to a Passenger Liner at short notice - and his shock, horror and dismay at the machinations of the crew - they've gotta get fur-coats for wives somehow - the deviousness of female passengers - they've gotta get a man somehow - and the general insanity of all other passengers - with the self-effacing (sic!) Major Broster (Maurice Denham) threatening hell-fire on Ebbs's head for the slightest infringement of privilege. Typical Richard Gordon beautifully adapted for the cinema.
An extremely funny film - and some lovely location shots with, I think, the "Orcades" as "Queen Adelaide".
