Product Description

Review

This excellent guide offers simple, practical ways to tackle worries, exhaustion, anger and depression. . .as well as simple but effective self-help exercises and tips throughout (Nursing Standard)

As a GP, I wish I could write a prescription for this book for every single person who has ever confronted and then survived cancer. The emotional fallout and psychological readjustment after cancer endures for years and impinges on many different facets of everyday personal and family life. Doctors and nurses can put you back together physically after cancer, but until now, emotional after-care has been badly lacking. Not any more. This book is the companion you need. It takes you gently by the hand and explains calmly and reassuringly exactly why you feel like you do and what you can change to put it right. Friendly, truthful, reliable and practical, I heartily recommend it (Dr Hilary Jones, GP and Medica broadcaster)

This book's practical, insightful tips and guidance are essential reading for anyone diagnosed with cancer who wants to learn coping strategies for those inevitable bleak moments, and for anyone who wants to understand what cancer sufferers are going through (Julia Palca, Chairman, Macmillan Cancer Support and cancer survivor)

OK - here's a given: when you hear the word cancer from your doctor, the emotional onslaught is such that it's hard to take much in, let alone ask those questions that may seem trivial to others, but that overwhelm you at 3a.m. That's why this book is great: practical, easy-to-follow ideas and information that you won't necessarily find on any one website, and that can help you feel more in control and less a victim. I'm proud to have contributed in some small way to a much needed, down-to-earth and valuable book (Trisha Goddard)

Book Description

Winner of the 2012 Best Health Book category in the Guild of Health Writers Awards and highly commended in the Popular Medicine category at the BMA Medical Book Awards 2012 this is the first UK book to look in depth at cancer survivorship and its emotional fallout. Government statistics indicate around 2 million people in the UK survive for at least 5 years post diagnosis and this figure is set to increase. This book will be an invaluable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered! 15 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've just finished active treatment for breast cancer and it was such a relief to pick up this book and realise that the mental trauma I am going through is completely normal and, most importantly, that there is something that can be done about it.

I had a mastectomy, chemotherapy & radiotherapy - the chemotherapy nearly killed me. You can end up in a really strange place emotionally once you stop going to the hospital all the time, even if like me you are on hormone therapy and/or regular check ups. Moving on is almost as tough as living through diagnosis and treatment because whether you like it or not, cancer changes your life, forever. This book fills an important gap in cancer treatment, and is already helping me deal with all the mental trauma I've been experiencing from diagnosis through treatment, I'm glad I bought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding very much awaited book! 15 Jun 2011
By Twinkle
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I first saw an article about the publication of this book in a supplement about Cancer and Cancer survivors and it immediately attracted my attention. As a cancer survivor of four years, I still struggle to deal with a wide range of issues on a daily basis and this book addresses all of these in a caring and sympathetic manner.

There are chapters on Low self esteeem and body image, depression, relationships, anger, fatigue. All of which are issues that I am certain any cancer survivor can directly relate to with easily achieveable strategies and methods that people can work through. There are also some excellent examples of other cancer survivors experiences and how some of the methods and strategies used by Dr Goodhart have helped them.It helps any cancer survivor to realise that they are not the only one going through similar experiences and that even a few small changes to their thought processes and their current negative patterns can make a real difference.

It is a long and slow process which can takes weeks, months and years but it is extremely reassuring to know that that there is a way in which cancer survivors can work through these. The book also offers advice for carers of cancer survivors and how bets they can support their loved ones which is equally important.

I am thrilled that at last a book is available which was written for me and many other cancer survivors which highlights the impact which cancer continues to have on our lives post treatment and as the numbers of survivors is ever on the increase due to phenomenal advances in medical science this book will provide an absolutely ESSENTIAL companion for anyone who has been through cancer (or their families)and suddenly feels that they are left on their own to cope once treatment has finished.

So go on give yourself a hug in a book (You deserve it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Some very welcome advice! 7 Jan 2012
By harp
Format:Paperback
I have just finished a year's treatment for breast cancer and returned to work. Although I was pleased to get to the end I felt flat and tired and was scolding myself for not feeling happy and elated. The book has really helped me by giving me sound advice and allowing myself to fall apart occasionally without feeling like a wimp. I am moving on now and this book has really helped me. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who has been through the trauma of cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant book 12 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book and I would definitely agree with one of the comments on the back of the book, that it is "essential reading for anyone diagnosed with cancer". It is very easy to read and full of useful advice. You don't have to read it from beginning to end but can dip into any chapter which you find is most relevant to you, but the whole book is really useful. I was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago and wish this book had been available then. I would recommend it to anyone trying to come to terms with life after a cancer diagnosis. Just to realise that I am not the only one struggling in certain areas has been an enormous help to me and the book doesn't just leave you there but gives very practical advice about how to move on. The information in it is also extremely helpful for relatives or carers of cancer survivors. Definitely worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars An oasis of calm and reassurance.... 23 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My Father has just finished Prostate cancer treatment and was recommended this book by a fellow sufferer .
I bought it for him and he , and i , were blown away by the straightforward, simple ,practical information that this book contains.
After treatment , according to my Dad , you think you should be euphoric but this is not the case apparently. You feel shocked ,scared, depressed and with after-effects thoroughly exhausted and shattered with emotional and physical stress you have been through.
This book works through every possible problem that you , and your family ! ,feel afterwards ..with case examples from fellow survivors and their families,..a thoroughly upbeat , practical , oasis of calm and professionalism ..a must have guide to allowing yourself to feel better, stronger and happier. Buy this Book ...!
