Review

As a GP, I wish I could write a prescription for this book for every single person who has ever confronted and then survived cancer. The emotional fallout and psychological readjustment after cancer endures for years and impinges on many different facets of everyday personal and family life. Doctors and nurses can put you back together physically after cancer, but until now, emotional after-care has been badly lacking. Not any more. This book is the companion you need. It takes you gently by the hand and explains calmly and reassuringly exactly why you feel like you do and what you can change to put it right. Friendly, truthful, reliable and practical, I heartily recommend it. --Dr Hilary Jones, GP and medical broadcaster

This book's practical, insightful tips and guidance are essential reading for anyone diagnosed with cancer who wants to learn coping strategies for those inevitable bleak moments, and for anyone who wants to understand what cancer sufferers are going through --Julia Palca, Chairman, Macmillan Cancer Support and cancer survivor

OK - here's a given: when you hear the word cancer from your doctor, the emotional onslaught is such that it's hard to take much in, let alone ask those questions that may seem trivial to others, but that overwhelm you at 3a.m. That's why this book is great: practical, easy-to-follow ideas and information that you won't necessarily find on any one website, and that can help you feel more in control and less a victim. I'm proud to have contributed in some small way to a much needed, down-to-earth and valuable book --Trisha Goddard

I've just finished active treatment for breast cancer and it was such a relief to pick up this book and realise that the mental trauma I am going through is completely normal and, most importantly, that there is something that can be done about it.

I had a mastectomy, chemotherapy & radiotherapy - the chemotherapy nearly killed me. You can end up in a really strange place emotionally once you stop going to the hospital all the time, even if like me you are on hormone therapy and/or regular check ups. Moving on is almost as tough as living through diagnosis and treatment because whether you like it or not, cancer changes your life, forever. This book fills an important gap in cancer treatment, and is already helping me deal with all the mental trauma I've been experiencing from diagnosis through treatment, I'm glad I bought it.

I first saw an article about the publication of this book in a supplement about Cancer and Cancer survivors and it immediately attracted my attention. As a cancer survivor of four years, I still struggle to deal with a wide range of issues on a daily basis and this book addresses all of these in a caring and sympathetic manner.

There are chapters on Low self esteeem and body image, depression, relationships, anger, fatigue. All of which are issues that I am certain any cancer survivor can directly relate to with easily achieveable strategies and methods that people can work through. There are also some excellent examples of other cancer survivors experiences and how some of the methods and strategies used by Dr Goodhart have helped them.It helps any cancer survivor to realise that they are not the only one going through similar experiences and that even a few small changes to their thought processes and their current negative patterns can make a real difference.

It is a long and slow process which can takes weeks, months and years but it is extremely reassuring to know that that there is a way in which cancer survivors can work through these. The book also offers advice for carers of cancer survivors and how bets they can support their loved ones which is equally important.

I am thrilled that at last a book is available which was written for me and many other cancer survivors which highlights the impact which cancer continues to have on our lives post treatment and as the numbers of survivors is ever on the increase due to phenomenal advances in medical science this book will provide an absolutely ESSENTIAL companion for anyone who has been through cancer (or their families)and suddenly feels that they are left on their own to cope once treatment has finished.

So go on give yourself a hug in a book (You deserve it!)
