I loved this book and it's detailed approach to England's canal system, the stories behind the building and how they are today. Beautifully photographed and nicely laid out. A well worthwhile addition to the canal travellers bookshelf, and a must for the amateur historian or armchair traveller alike.

The book is set up so that you can find information quickly. Great for us that are learning about the canals with a view to eventually living aboard.

In covering the canals of Britain is a major task and to undertake a truly comprehensive guide would require many volumes of work. This book provides an excellent overview with basic details and lots of photographs to wet the appetite or visiting them. To actually visit them, there will be a need for a more detailed map and in many case these are readily available. Also information on the internet can also provide very valuable information as in many cases there are societies or clubs that advertise the value and amenity value of many of the canals described.

This is certainly a comprehensive guide of canals (and a surprisingly thick book), but be aware it does not include navigable rivers, such as the River Thames. Some of the canals I didn't even know existed, but each one has a good map showing the immediate vicinity alongside the canal, and a good selection of photos (although the quality and size of these is slightly disappointing). Each canal has a description giving its early history, features along the route, and its current condition. Overall it's a useful guide to give you the background and 'flavour' of each canal.

This book is a superb publication covering the canals of Britain. It is not a guide book but rather a celebration of our inland waterways. It is packed with photographs of every imaginable waterway and a few more besides. Highly recommended

The book was clear about the extent of the canal coverage, was clearly written and easy to read, or dip into for specific information.
There were plenty of photographs, which helped make it attractive, especially for a 12 year old.
