this book is fairly basic, mainly aimed at people with little camping experience or with aspirations of getting into camping who are unsure of where to start. saying that, the way the book is written, in a nice, laid-back style, with anecdotal advice and genuine camping experiences, is inspirational enough to make it interesting for regular campers.
it has a very family oriented vibe to it and is nicely illustrated with the kind of photography that makes you want to get out there. the recipes section particularly appealed to my girlfriend's love of the one-pot camp cooking ethic and the advice on camping activities such as outdoor swimming are informative whilst still being slightly rebellious.
though this is a basics guide to camping, i'd still say it was interesting enough for someone with much camping experience and there are tips and advice that come form genuine experience, making it a good, informative read.

A very 'basic' book which manages to string out a very few items of common sense into a book by using lots of photographs. Ok it you are a complete novice but otherwise a waste of time

I was looking for the kind of camping book that gave me not only the basic common sense advice, but also some real gems of wisdom from experienced campers - like keeping soap in old tights!
This really doesn't do it for me. I've only been camping a few times and very little of this was news or new to me.
If I was a complete novice and needed advice or reassurance on what to buy starting from scratch, e.g. air mattress vs sleeping mat and the basics on the type of cooking equipment to buy, then it might be useful as it discusses the options - although very briefly and I do think you'd gather as much from spending 10 minutes looking at a few product reviews.
Other advice - beyond what to buy and take - is mainly common sense, like: if it is your first time camping, try out your tent in your backgarden or nearby for a weekend before going further afield.
I will use it for the recipies - which do look interesting - but not for much else

just what i needed
we are only embarking on the great adventure of family camping this year. i'm a bit nervous with three small kids but looking forward to using the advice in the book.
