Product Description

Product Description

Susanna Kaysen, who wrote about her teenage depression in the bestseller Girl, Interrupted, now takes on another taboo: her vagina–which suddenly and inexplicably starts to hurt. And neither Kaysen’s cheery gynecologist, nor her internist, nor a laconic “vulvologist” has the cure. An alternative health nurse suggests direct application of tea, baking soda, and boric acid. Others recommend novocaine, oatmeal, “bio-feedback,” and anti-depressants. Nothing works. As sex becomes more and more painful, Kaysen’s relationship with her boyfriend disintegrates and she turns to her best friends, her wicked sense of humor, and finally wry self-reflection to get herself through.

Using this unusual lens, Kaysen challenges us to think in new ways about the centrality and power of sexuality. The Camera My Mother Gave Me is an unexpected and revelatory book from one of our most candid, insightful and consistently surprising writers.

This is the most recent book from the author who gave us 'Girl, Interrupted', which is one of my favourite books and films. Once again it's a autobiographical piece. However it's not a mental illness that Susanna is suffering from, it is a physical one, involving her vagina. It's hurting pure and simple. It hurts when she's havign sex, when she's in the bath and when she's sitting down. Her doctor doesn't know what's wrong with her and neither, it seems, does anyone else. What follows is an enlightning and funny story as we join Kaysen in discovering what the problem is. We see her falling out with her boyfriend as a result of this ailment, turning to her wisened neighbours and friends in search of relief. We read on as she tries all sorts of strange remedies in hope of salvation. It's a quick read, while not as prolific as Interrupted, it's a fun read, lighthearted but it will stick with you for a while. Definitely recommended.

Suffering from vulvodynia myself for the last 13 years I can relate to a lot of the things Susanna Kaysen describes in the book. It took doctors 8 years before actually diagnosing me with vulvodynia, I was constantly fobbed off before, told it was just cystitis. I knew it couldn't be that but none of the doctors I approached would listen to me when I told them this. It was actually myself who found out about vulvodynia & told my gynocologist who THEN agreed it was indeed what I had. And as Susanna I made 'tents' in the bed & tried things such as baths with all sorts of stuff in them which as Susanna also found made it worse.
Although the book takes you through how she went from doctor to doctor, and how she felt, what she tried etc. The book ends just as she finds out what it actually is thats been plaguing her and so you dont get to hear what happens then, what treatments are tried and so forth which is a shame as I would like to know how she went on.
I thought her boyfriend was EXTREMELY selfish in constantly trying to 'force' her into having sex when it so obviously hurt her rather than being there for her and understanding that it was preventing her from even wanting sex.
I reccomend this book to all women suffering from these types of conditions and to doctors so they can understand what we are going through and that by fobbing us off & not listening to us you are making things worse.

Susanna Kaysen's writing, as ever, draws you into reading. This book, like it's predicesor, is difficult to put down. However, those looking for a new 'Girl, Interupted', will be sorely dissapointed. 'The Camra My Mother Gave Me' is another autobiography, again focusing on a two-year period of Ms. Kaysen's life. This time however, she is much older, and is having trouble with her vagina. The book lists all the visits to doctors, herbal medics, more doctors... until the phantom pain in her vagina destroys her relationship with her boyfriend. Funny in places, and it will probabily be of interest to some, but I felt it just wasn't a good as her previous book.
