Product Description

Product Description

When eighteen-year-old Christopher Myers’ parents are murdered, something is written on his bedroom door, a mark in his parents’ blood that convinces the police the killer has targeted Christopher as the next victim. To keep him safe, he travels away with his estranged grandmother and uncle to the small town of Bridgton, New York. And it’s in Bridgton that he meets an extraordinary young man who has come with his father to stop an unrelenting evil. Soon Christopher learns of the town’s deep dark secret, and how his parents’ murder was no accident, and how he has been brought to Bridgton by forces beyond his power—forces that just may threaten the destruction of all mankind. Advance Praise for THE CALLING: “THE CALLING is a powerful, gripping and terrifying novel, the sort that possesses your whole life while you’re reading it; it’ll stalk you through the day, and inform your dreams. Swartwood has delivered a novel that will become a classic.” — Tim Lebbon “Robert Swartwood’s THE CALLING is a diabolical rocket sled of a psychological thriller. Told through the vivid, almost druggy point of view of a young man on the edge, tangled in a web of tragedy and surreal horror, Swartwood’s novel gets under the skin and stays there. Highly recommended.” — Jay Bonansinga

I enjoyed this book so much - I couldn't wait to get a spare half an hour, or to go to bed early, just so I could get back into the story. Christopher's parents are murdered, and he goes to stay with the only family he has left, even though he hasn't seen them for many years (the result of his grandfather kidnapping him, we later learn!). There are just so many twists and turns, so many 'coincidences' and so many of the characters are linked to each other, and to Christopher, that it's a joy to be able to keep up with them all! It really does draw you in and make you feel part of the story.

I don't want to spoil anything, so won't go into details - but I really do urge anyone who likes a supernatural tale to read this book. It's better than anything else in this genre I've read for a very long time! I'm now a fan of this author and can't wait to read more by him.

What a great read! 13 Feb 2012

I always read horror and struggled to find an author to match Koontz and Herbert. I read about 6 books from alternative authors on the kindle before finding this one and was far from disappointed. It was a truly gripping story. It felt like I knew the characters personally and was living the nightmare for them. Compelling with not many jobs in the house completed that week! Only one tiny critism, it finished too early!!

Christopher wakes up to find his parents murdered and mutilated. Then moves to a trailer park to stay with estranged family to be out of harms way.

He befriends the locals and the story unravels . . . each have their own back story and motive. Things are not as they appear. A dark angel stalks his movements and those of others connected to his family. He must pay for a sin committed by his grandfather.

He meets preacher Moses and his son Joey who have 'insider knowledge' of the demon
and it seems that revenge and testing mans' weakness is what this dark angel thrives on

A great plot, but too many characters have tenuous links to each other and to the supernatural goings-on. Some parts are fast paced so you whiz through the action but there are sections which do nothing to take the story forward.

Overall I really enjoyed and would recommend this book so 4 stars. The plot is good, the premise exciting, the pace mostly good.

I did minus 1 star as I must admit to skipping at least 4 pages of description of the trailer park town and for my liking a slight cull of some minor characters would have made the story flow better.
