PRAISE FOR THIS BOOK:

"If you revere the 'traditionalists' of the horror field like I do -- Lovecraft, Hugh B. Cave, Clark Ashton Smith, Manly Wade Wellman (who was one of my mentors, I'm proud to say) -- then you'll love these tales. Many of them would have had pride of place in any issue of Weird Tales in the 30s or 40s."
--Al Sarrantonio, author of Skeletons, Moonbane, and Halloween and Other Seasons

PRAISE FOR DAVID NIALL WILSON'S WORK

For Deep Blue: " Wilson demonstrates that a horror novel doesn't need gallons of blood to succeed, that spiritual terror can be even more effective." – Publisher's Weekly

"This is an exquisite meditation upon the nature of pain and redemption written with a blues sensibility that rolls through the mind like bleak, resounding chords of dark music. The perfect novel for a hot, sultry night." – J. L. Comeau – CountGore.com

For This is My Blood: "Wilson's prose is smooth and powerful, carrying its allegorical weight with grace. His first novel is one of the most unique vampire stories to appear in recent years, balancing themes of damnation and prophesy against those of faith and redemption." – Publisher's Weekly

For The Orffyreus Wheel – " The book started off with a bang. From page one the book is intense and filled with suspense." – Blondie – Amazon.com

5 Star Collection 19 Oct 2011
By DJP
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Brim full of creepy intent, calculated panic and more than a touch of Lovecraftian flavouring - The Call of Distant Shores is a fantastic collection of short stories that will test your sanity whilst drawing a smile.

From the eerie backwoods horror of `Are You Lookin' For Herb?', to the equally downhome but much lighter and altogether more wondrous `Cockroach Suckers', and the yearning for Home and the Sea of the title story - this is a style of storytelling in which David excels - a mix of local, charming storytelling, with a distinctly creepy tone that builds to a generally scary but satisfying climax, with a touch of laid-back humour as required.

A definite nod to Lovecraftian timbre and styling can be found in the desperation of `From My Reflection, Darkly', the insanity in the corner of your eye of `Darkness - and the Light' and the epic tones of `Death, and his Brother, Sleep' - all dealing with the fabric of sanity that thins in certain places.

Quaint morbid fascination shines through in the joint effort `Death Did Not Become Him' - a Sherlock Holmes tale that thrusts Watson into a terrifying mystery. This very careful storytelling counterpoints the whirling miasma of `The Milk of Paradise', the dangerous blurring of desire in `Rending the Veil', and the stark and terrifying `Anomaly'.

To finish, as if the others weren't enough - there is the panic and alarm that masquerades within the seemingly normal setting of `Glenn and the Tart of Mortar Psycho Maine Tenants', the Tarot inspired desire and ambition of `The Lost Wisdom of Instinct' and the epic, ancient telling of avarice and power that asks too much in `The Hall of Captured Gods'

All of them brilliant, all of them different - this is a really great collection if you're after some satisfying Horror and Dark Fiction.

Some of David Wilson's Best Work. 6 Oct 2011
By Eric Marcum - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
From the first page to the last, I enjoyed every story in this collection. This is one of those books that leave you eager to read more of the author's work. In The Call Of Distant Shores, Wilson spins tales with the atmosphere of the best Lovecraft stories, without being mere copies of the Lovecraft style. These stories are extremely well crafted, and engrossing. I have been reading the authors work for years, and I have to say that this is some of his best work yet. I read most of this set while on my lunch breaks at work, and had on more than one occasion, been so engrossed that I went over my half hour by several minutes.
Buy this collection, you won't be sorry. The only sorrow comes with the last page, when the realization sets in that there are no more left to read of this collection.

Lovecraftian...sorta 12 Feb 2012
By Jeffrey B. Powers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book meets the minimum requirement to be considered in the overwhelmingly large mythos subgenre. It isn't a hard group to get involved in really. I gave this book a shot because all the reviews were so glowingly positive. My own opinion however differed greatly. I have been reading Lovecraft and Lovecraft inspired works for years. My own blog is even dedicated to it. There are many great writers out there who work with HPL's ideas. Whether writing Lovecraft pastiches, working within his created environments and settings, or just inspired by the father of cosmic horror. The Call of Distant Shores on the other hand is like the massive collections of less inspired and skilled writers. The inspiration and connection to Lovecraft is easily felt, but everyone of the stories worked far better in the hands of other authors. Other opinions seem to differ from mine, and it seems others like this. But I can't seem myself recommending it. Even after you have finished rereading HPL, or checking out Derleth or even Brian Lumley, there is still so much better works out there than this collection. Wilson is skilled enough to get a pass, impressive enough compared to much of the horror being published these days, but this book certainly doesn't stand out in the crowd.
