Belinda Jones takes you on another road trip that twists and turns but is immensley satisfying. Divas Las Vegaas taught me everything that was good about Vegas, The California Club has taught me how great California will be. You become a character in Belinda's books - you know she's been there and done that but by the end of the book, I'd been there with her - BJ's books just get better and better. Read this for a bit of summer warmth this winter

I bought this book during a 5/6 hour delay at the airport before going on holiday and i'm soo glad. Its a brilliant summer book and great reading for the beach. I really got to know the characters and totally fell for Elliot even if he acted like a wimp! The setting was amazing and i would love to have a go at the california club. I must confess, i liked it the book so much i read it at least 3 times in my 2 week holiday!

I loved all the other books I have read by this author but this one left me cold. The main character, Lara, has an obsession with her male best friend Elliot who is engaged to Elise. The petty small mindedness of Lara and her attitude of me, me, me really turned me off this book. It was totally predictable and I couldn't wait to finish it....for all the wrong reasons! The only feeling I was left with was pity for Elise at the end of the book and shortchanged by the extremely lazy ending. It seems as though the author ran out of ideas at the end and just chucked any old resolution in so she could finish the book and cash in. It gets two stars for the scene between Elise and Lara in the clinic and the fact that the authors books are usually so brilliantly readable. Give this one a miss.

Another fantastic book from Ms Jones. This book is particularly funny, with laugh out loud moments throughout. The theme of unrequited love is something I can symapthise with, and Belinda handles it with her usual finese. I was delighted the characters come from Brighton, my home town. Once again her observiations on her chosen destination make you want to skip to the travel agent and arrange next summer's holiday. California has so much to offer. Bring it on!

I am sorry to say I felt a bit let down by this book. Generally I love Belinda Jones - "I Love Capri" was fantastic for example and made me want to book a holiday there immediately! However, this book was just odd.

By the end of the book I didn't really like Elliot much for example - he was weak. Therefore I wanted Lara to do better. Equally, other characters didn't really build enough for me. I think Sasha wasn't developed enough, nor Zoe for that matter. Joel was just too good to be true, and a lot of the plot lacked plausibility (no option but getting on a plane dressed as Jane Russell in a red sequin dress?? Really??). What was also very suprising was that usually Belinda Jones throws me into the location of the story. Because of all the jumping around in this book, I didn't get a true sense of location at all.

I finished this book feeling disatisfied and frustrated. I got the impression it was written in a hurry and that it was a number of half thought out ideas and characters meshed together that didn't quite work. Shame.

My mother-in-law persuaded me to read this knowing that I hate so called 'women's fiction'. "The California Club" however came as a really refreashing suprise. Witty, sophisticated and laugh-out-loud funny, this book had me captivated the whole way through. The characters are instantly endearing, the plot fresh and fast paced, and the dialogue razor-sharp. Belinda Jones has not relied on smutty sex scenes to sell her book to which I am eternally grateful, instead it has a subtlety and realisim absent in a lot of women's fiction yet lacks none of the romance. So does the girl get the guy? Well you'll have to read it to find out...!
