More About the Author

I'm an all-weather walker, writer and photographer based in Southern Scotland. My special interest is in multi-day backpack trips over rough country, and I have completed 18 different coast-to-coast journeys across various parts of the UK. I like to sleep out without tent on UK hilltops, and have achieved comfortable nights on more than 70 in Scotland, Cumbria, and elsewhere in the UK.

In 1995 I won the Fell Running Association's Long Distance Trophy for a 10-day run over all the hills of Southern Scotland - a journey of 450 miles with over 90,000ft of ascent. I once completed the Ben Nevis race in 1hr 58 mins, and have climbed the Eiger but by its Mittelegi Ridge not its North Face.

I write in the magazines Lakeland Walker, TGO (formerly The Great Outdoors), Trail, Cumbria and elsewhere. In 1999, The Angry Corrie magazine wrote: "Turnbull is ultimately worth reading, not just because of the clever quirkiness of his thoughts and phrases but because his night yomps and his high bivvies and his off-beat, off-beaten-track jaunts show that he retains that most basic of outdoor-writer essentials: a simple love of being out there, somewhere, on the surface of the planet."

Synopsis

In over 100 walks this first Cicerone walking guide to the Cairngorms explores the region's 23 Munro summits and also the smaller viewpoint hills outside the main range. For the adventurous there are the best of the area's rocky scrambles, and the classic through-routes used by cattle-drovers and Queen Victoria. For others there are easy, sandy trails wandering among the tall pines and along the banks of the great rivers Spey, Nethy and Dee. Britain's biggest mountain range is special in several ways. There's the granite plateau, and an Arctic ecosystem of gravel, boulders and late-lying snow. There are the glacial glens and high corries, where green lochans lie below great crags of the plateau rim. And at the hill foot grows the ancient Caledonian forest. Along with the main Cairngorm range between Speyside and Deeside the book covers Lochnagar. It complements Cicerone's winter climbing guide to the region.

Very well laid out with lots of inspiration to get you into the great outdoors.

Didn't give it 5 stars as we've found some errors in the text which could lead you quite astray - don't think the author can have checked his draft notes carefully enough by re-doing the walks before the book was put to print!

Other than that one criticism, the book is recommended.

I have found this book a brilliant resource for planning walks in the Cairngorms. It is very easy to link up shorter walks to be able to have extended walking routes that will enable some wild camping on route. All in all a very comprehensive guide, but I would recommend using this book in conjunction with the Cairn Gorm and Aviemore O.S. map and not use the book as a stand alone navigation aid
