5.0 out of 5 stars Good old fashioned science fiction 17 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This isn't hard scifi where the author needs to explain the science behind everything - this is more Firefly, Andromeda style science fiction. You know the type... fun!
I read this is one sitting, stopping only for coffee. It was great. The dialogue is smooth, the prose well crafted and the overall technical writing pretty damn good.

I've seen reviews complaining about the FTL drive. Considering that this technology isn't even invented yet - I find the fact that people are questioning the plausibility a bit of a laugh. This is a fiction novel, set in space. It's not exactly realistic is it? Just let go and enjoy the ride.

The three main characters were strong, and multi-faceted, I found them to be layered and easy to relate to. In fact, I think most readers would find something of themselves in them and that's a great thing.

If you let go and just enjoy this - you won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced decent read with quirks 2 Aug 2013
By W. McMannis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was a decent read, but not very long I finished it in one sitting of about 4 hours. Interesting story, and non stop action once it got started. Some of the characters seem a bit pointless as really the story only revolves around 2-3 of the five or so main characters, and the others are more supporting roles that are constantly there. Such as the security officer, how basically is told how to do any security or tactic related thing by the captain. It seems the security officers only real job is to pull off a few precision snapshots from time to time. The engineer is also the pilot which he does that more than anything engineering related during the book, that and be the incredible hulk. I found it a bit quirky in quite a few places either by phrase, action, or feasibility; like the space station jail cells that have metal and stone walls, or the hanger on the ship "equalizing pressure" with space instead of being a vacuum, or the three 40 ton nukes the size of a garbage can, stacked in the corner of an ammo closet without somehow falling through the floor of the ship (or how 40 tons fits in a garbage can sized area. Overall it is a decent read, if you don't mind 3 overly powered main characters saving the world almost single-handily, with unexplained technology, such as the experimental FTL engine/generator than needs no fuel, never breaks down even on its test flight and is faster than all the aliens ships that have had FTL for thousands of years. If your into hard science or even quasi sci then you will not enjoy the book, but if you want fast paced sci-fi action then you will probably enjoy it. I will most likely read the rest of the series as it is a good read for what it is.

2.0 out of 5 stars halfway decent story line, I guess...I'm not interested in reading the second book 30 July 2014
By Trevor Merle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The logic used in this book is inept...the characters in this book are portrayed as highly competent leaders in their respective feild, but their actions and dialog cast them trigger happy 13 year old cowboys that are severely lacking in common sense. Their also isn't a sense of time in this book, it's all a series of events that are mashed together without any character building indetween.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and Inviting! 29 Oct 2013
By Alysia Bouyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Cagliostro Chronicles Is a must read. The story writing is engaging and the character development is spot on. You don't have to be an avid science fiction reader to enjoy this book it appeals to fans of the genre and new comers alike. The book is not bogged down in technical jargon and flows as you read it. The story has a futuristic feel but doesn't seem to far fetched or over reaching. I cant wait for the next book to come out I will definitely be buying it! So grab a cup of coffee and curl up with The Cagliostro Chronicles you wont be sorry you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars OLD FASHION SPACE OPERA ACTION!! 27 Aug 2014
By Ron Fortier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Long ago we discovered a copy of E.E. “Doc” Smith’s classic sci-fi novel, “The Skylark of Space.” What impressed us was how the action centered around two civilian scientists who build an amazing spacecraft and come up with the means to launch it into deep space where they have many fantastic adventures. Smith is often credited as being the father of that sci-fi sub-genre known as the Space Opera. But at that time most such tales generally featured military heroes whereas not so in this story. The fact that the heroes were civilians was one of the many aspects of the book we enjoyed and so remember it fondly to this day.

Which brings us to Ralph Angelo’s “The Cagliostro Chronicles,” a bonafide space opera that follows in Smith’s footsteps with its protagonists being the crew of a civilian made spaceship. Genius aeronautical engineer, Mark Johnson, has built the massive Cagliostro and outfitted here with a unique magnetic engine of his own invention that will allow it to travel faster than light; in effect transport him and his crew to the far reaches of the galaxy in the blink of an eye. He and his hand picked crew are about to embark on a “shake-down” flight when Johnson’s friend, General Abruzzi begins acting very strangely. Johnson suspects, for whatever illogical purposes, the general not only does not want him to launch the Cagliostro but is in fact planning to forcefully take it from. Heeding his instincts, he takes off ahead of schedule and sure enough finds the entire Earth Space Navy chasing after him and his crew.

Using their new FTL drive, they manage to escape to the farthest reaches of the galaxy and there, Johnson confides in his team; made up of a beautiful telepath named Ariel, a super-strong security chief and several other gifted scientists. Under secret orders of the President, Johnson has learned that evidence exist of alien incursions into out Solar System and has been ordered to discover the origin of mysterious space messages intercepted by the government. The Cagliostro’s first mission is to discover who is sending these transmissions and what their intent is.

We found this first half of the book slow. Understandably Angelo was burdened with laying out the basic plot, identifying his characters etc.etc. in the basic set-up. Still we kept hoping the pacing would pick and are happy to report it does so in grand fashion once we get to the inhabited, alien worlds. From that point on Angelo is clearly channeling classic pulp writers like Doc Smith and Edmond Hamilton as he propels our likeable heroes into one adventure after another as they eventually realize the Earth is in jeopardy from a full-blown alien invasion armada. By the time they race back to our Solar System, there isn’t a moment to spare. Clones of government officials have infiltrated the highest branches of the government and are working to assure the invasion’s success. Exposing them is only a small part of the ray-blasting action. Now it is up to Johnson and the crew of the Cagliostro to orchestrate a viable defense strategy that will give the Earth forces a chance to survive the coming onslaught.

If you like super space battles with thousands of ships engaged in a life and death struggle, with heroes larger than life and last minute rescues, “The Cagliostro Chronicles” was written for you and all Space Opera lovers. It is a headlong rush into the wonders and dangers that mankind will some day have to confront. Let’s hope we have real men like Captain Mark Johnson to lead the way.

If the author is reading this I hope you make many sequels for this book. The storyline was well ordered and the story was one of the best I've ever read. I think someone should make a movie on this concept. Thank you for reading this.
