Book Description

19 May 2011

* Once known for its exquisite tea, drowsy climate, and amiable people, Sri Lanka was the Indian Ocean jewel of the British Empire. After Independence, the island enjoyed a liberal parliamentary democracy with a lively independent press and a booming economy. It had a judiciary, an efficient economy, and a stability envied by emerging nations. The world expected a leader amongst nations.

* Instead, in pursuit of power and fundamentalist Buddhism, an oligarchy of Sinhalese political leaders and monks hi-jacked democracy. In response a brutal enemy was born: the Tamil Tigers. The result, one of modern history's longest civil conflicts, spawned a host of horrific innovations: suicide bombers, child soldiers, death squads, violent Buddhism and murdered journalists.

* But ethnic conflict is only part of the story.

* Twenty-seven years on, with Iran, Burma, Libya, and China as its closest allies, democracy has been reduced to a cabal of brothers who control the economy, the courts, and the media. Today they tout their bloody conquest of the Tamil Tiger guerrillas as an example for other nations with 'terrorist' problems.

* Gordon Weiss, a veteran journalist and UN official for two decades, was firmly entrenched in the conflict as spokesperson for the United Nations in Colombo. He was a close observer as, in just four months in 2009, tens of thousands of civilians perished, cornered, along with the last of the Tamil Tigers on a windy spit.

* This account unravels the compelling history that leads up to that horrific moment, peeling back the Sri Lankan government's cloak of silence to reveal the events of those weeks beat by beat.

* The Cage offers a rare glimpse into the reality behind the daily headlines: the inner workings of media manipulation, and the plight of international aid workers struggling to provide humanitarian assistance to those caught in the crossfire of a deadly civil conflict.

Product Description

Review

`a striking account of the ruthless terror wreaked by both sides on the innocent civilians trapped in the pocket of land ... he has published the first comprehensive, factual account of the mass killing and why the UN was powerless to prevent it'
--Sunday Times

`comprehensive, fair and well-written' --Literary Review

A fair and brilliantly written tour de force of this long forgotten war. A book that is long overdue --Roma Tearne, author of Brixton Beach

A striking account of the ruthless terror wreaked by both sides on the innocent civilians trapped in a pocket of land... [Weiss's] book is a powerful indictment of the leadership of President Rajapaksa --Jon Swain, The Sunday Times

'So what does the Sri Lankan government have to hide? That's the question Gordon Weiss sets out to answer in this painstakingly researched and referenced study, and his conclusions are nothing short of horrific... he lines up his targets carefully, then picks them off with surgical precision... he gives a brief but illuminating history of the origins of Sri Lanka's civil strife'
--Scotsman

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cage 27 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Cage makes for a compelling read. It starts with a surprising and relevant history of Sri Lanka, but quickly gets into detail on many of the aspects of the war that seem to contradict the benign and peaceful Buddhist view of the world with the chain of events that tragically unfolded.
In many other global conflicts, bodies such as the UN and the ICRC come in for some criticism and again, The Cage goes some way to explaining why the UN, in particular, seems so toothless when it comes to protecting those most in need. Other aid organisations are also mentioned and the bravery and dedication of all those caught up in the war, the UN included, should never be underestimated.
Weiss is no apologist however and the book is very well balanced in it's view of this and the horrific events and atrocities committed by both sides over the 30 years of conflict.
The Cage also throws light on another puzzling aspect of the final stages of the war. With the advent of satellite communications, mobile telephones and the internet along with other relatively prevalent methods of quick transmission of information, how can any regime get away with bluffing it's way through undeniable evidence in the face of a shocked and disbelieving international community?
Once again, the answers are ugly and brutal. This is a harrowing, but important read for anybody interested not only in the events shaping Sri Lanka, but the shift in Global geopolitical power and how and why this has impacted Sri Lanka from afar. I suspect Weiss is accurate in his predictions with regard to future conflicts that are in the making right now.

I have read plenty of nonsense and have been told by Gordon Weiss himself that people think he's out to make big bucks by writing an account of the 33-year civil war of Sri Lanka.

As someone who has actually read the book (unlike most others, who criticise it after just reading the back cover), I honestly can't believe that the book comes at such a low price (about US$13.5 in Sri Lanka).

The level of research that he has done when writing facts in his book can be gauged from the fact that there are 51 pages worth of citations for just 261 pages of actual material!

Moving onto the book itself, I have to praise Gordon Weiss, again, for the level of research that he has done.

Rather than delving straight away into the gory details of the war itself, he gives a short lesson in Sri Lankan history, including a fair-bit about the politics in the late 19th century. This gives us a context about how the flame of Sinhala nationalism was stoked by Anagarika Dharmapala.

He then moves onto the 2 JVP military insurrections, where he says the manner in which the insurrections were crushed and the pure cold-blooded murder of fellow Sinhalese citizens by the Government of Sri Lanka blazed the path for the cold-blooded murder of North-East Tamils. If Sinhalese people can be murdered so ruthlessly by the Government, what hope is there for the Tamil people?

After this, he goes onto what is famously known as Eelam War IV (the one which started in late 2006) and brings up a number of incidents which were, hitherto, unknown to the outside world, due to the suppression of the media by the GoSL.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cage 27 Jun 2011
By goony
Format:Paperback
Well written, unbiased, opinion piece for the interested reader on the root cause of the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and then a first hand description of the final barbaric end of the military conflict. Most books on this topic are laced with propoganda from either side so its good to read a piece from a neutral witness to the events.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Cage by Gordon Weiss 26 Jun 2011
By Laurat
Format:Paperback
I found this The Cage by Gordon Weiss to be a well balanced and well researched book.
It was unbiased ,both parties to the conflict being guilty of atrosities. The sequence of events is well documented with first hand information obtained from persons who had experienced or witnessed the events.
I took my time reading it,without hurrying through and would recommand it to anyone who
would be interested in the "last days of the tigers (LTTE)

Must read. One can understand how prolonged state sponsored terrorism can lead to so called terrorism by the oppressed.

A ground report on the Genocide of a minority community by a regime. Covers not just the happening but the build up of majority extremism that led to non-violent struggle by the minority which when brutally crushed turned into an armed struggle. Deja vu with the international powers supporting such regimes in their actions and when the regimes turn against these powers, in the past they always did, the same powers call for blood. Happened in Afghanistan & Iraq.

Good story telling given that the author chose to stick with established facts. There are a number of facts missing on purpose as the reports could not be completely verified due to government clamp down on international organisations and the media and the author restricted himself to proven reports.

Another proof to the theory that the UN is a protector of governments rather than justice.
