excellent older book about a neglected period 3 April 2009
By Beth in Iowa - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book is an excellent introduction to Byzantium, for both children (ages 10-14, for whom the book is intended) and adults. There are few books about this crucial city and empire - compared to ancient Rome or Medieval Europe, this vital link between the two periods is given scant coverage in children's history books.

This book, however, gives all the information necessary for a basic understanding of the city's history, told in readable prose in a conversational tone by the author. There are no color photos in the book, only some black and white line drawings, but unlike in modern, glossy history books, they do not seem necessary.

I highly recommend this book to both children and adults who wish to learn something about this vital historical period. And the price of used copies of this out-of-print title make it a bargain.
Great overview for young adults 11 Jan 2014
By Mattias V. Bergman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I was researching Constantinople for a book I am writing, and needed some background color. While this book is aimed at the young adult, the author provides a really good overview of the Byzantine empire, and how people lived in it. For a closer look at the why's and wherefore's of the political intrigue, I would recommend Azimov's book instead, but the overview provided by this helped me put more in-depth works into the proper perspective.
