Product Description

Review

This is an easily read book which is essential reading to raise aspirations and to improve personal confidence, both for teenagers and adults. The section Go for It is particularly relevant for individual students who want to improve their performance, by giving them skills to deal with issues such as self doubt, negative peer pressure and low self esteem. The book will be a valuable resource for teachers, tutors and mentors at all levels of education and will give them a renewed positive buzz to raise student aspirations and achievement. Possibly the title and the front cover do not fully sell the excellent content of the book. If you were to mark your life out of 10, what score would you give yourself? What score would your teenager give his or herself? To help you get the highest possible score, The Buzz tackles three areas : how to make your personality buzz, how to make your behaviour buzz, and how to really buzz (i.e. go for it) in your life. The book is heavily based on NLP and Personality Type theory but is amazingly accessible to teenagers (and to parents, too - I only handed it over to the teenagers after I'd used it on myself, of course!). I LOVED this book. It felt exciting to read, I felt that I was finding out more about myself on every page - and, better still, understanding how and why other people have such a huge influence on how I feel. There are loads of techniques, tips and tricks - but the best bit of all is the motivation to understand yourself better and really get what you want out of life. I'm also a lot better now at turning fears into positive, helpful actions. Excellent. Families South West rating: ********* --Families South West

For too long careers work has focussed disproportionately on the development of knowledge and skills. David's accessible, engaging and entertaining work reminds us that values and behaviours are an equally important component of personal development and can be developed by everyone and at any time to discover and realise their full potential. THE BUZZ - a practical confidence builder for teenagers
David Hodgson

The Buzz is a no-nonsense, jargon-free book which demonstrates how teachers, therapists, parents and work with those often difficult teenagers to develop confidence.
David Hodgson has worked with young people for many years, and shares his tools and techniques with the reader.
This book provides a framework to get young people talking about themselves, exploring aspects of their personality, and how they relate to others, and offers solutions, alternatives, and reasons for why we do what we do. It covers issues that are common to all teenagers, and offers tools and techniques for coping with them.
This is a useful book for anyone who deals with teenagers, as it uses easily accessible language, there are simple, fun exercises, and it requires no knowledge of NLP to understand. What I like about THE BUZZ is the way it steers clear of any confusing jargon - there is a short explanatory section at the back of the book, if you want to know more about the thinking and theory behind the exercises - and you could work through the book in a conversational mode, rather than a lecturing one.
The book is divided into three sections:
Finding out who we are - discovering personality preferences; how to use them to find out what you're naturally good at and how to get on better with people.
Finding out what makes us buzz - how our emotions and reactions to situations effect us
Deciding to go for it - confidence building strategies for any occasion.
This book should be in every staffroom - I'm sure teachers would be able to use some of the tips on themselves, too!

A spot of genius 15 April 2012

This is my favourite, most used and universally loved resource amongst all my students. I use it tirelessly to help Students -and staff - to consider what makes them tick and the reasons they are the 'way they are'. Inspiring, easy to use and full of humour, this book brings myers Briggs analysis to a new level and is a must-have tool for all inclusion and learning mentors and coaches. A fantastic resource.

Having attended one of David Hodgson's training sessions at work I found his personality type quiz really enjoyable. I used it at home with my friends and family. They all happily set about identifying their personality type and even used it to review their career choices. In the classroom, I found the quiz very useful in helping students to become more self aware. David Hodgson's book is effectively, to me, the acceptable face of psychometric testing. It is definitely student friendly. I found it particularly helpful for students filling in UCAS forms to identify their strengths and express them in writing. Especially those students aiming for the professions. I also used it to help students examine some of their study habits and to consider modifying them. Essentially, they were encouraged to either become more organised and task 'finishers' or more spontaneous and creative depending on which 'type' they identified themselves as. This process helped me to build closer relationships with my students as they were surprised to find out how well I seemed to know them.
