5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of a wonderful childhood recalled! 8 Oct 2007
Format:Hardcover
My Mother had a copy of this book when she was young, and it was read again and again when my brother and I were growing up , well into the 90's. Despite it's yellowing pages and well worn spine it was always our favourite.
The artwork is truly enchanting; even now, in such modern times, I'd wager it could spark the imagination of any child. Likewise, the verses are so wonderfully written; they leap off the page just as brightly as the pictures themselves.
It must be 12 years or more since I last thumbed these pages; but I remember it now as vividly as ever: Mr Mole, in particular, whose velvet jacket looked immensley realistic.
This is one of those books that stays with you: I challenge anyone who owned it as a child not to recall it with such warmth as I have here.
A best buy for anyone with younger children (I'd say anywhere from 2-8 years); indeed it makes a wonderful addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars buterfly ball 23 Oct 2007
By C. Read
Format:Hardcover
I remember meeting illusrator Alan Aldridge whilst at Art College in the '60s. He was giving a lecture, & I was spellbound. I loved his work & the Butterfly Ball is the tops. It is very reminiscent of the art of the time, but also of all the much loved fairy tales of my youth. A wonderful book & a "must have" for any serious collector of childrens illustrated books.

5.0 out of 5 stars artwork like you've never seen! 18 April 2012
By sally tarbox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The gorgeous illustrations in this book remain vivid in my memory forty years on: the dragonfly hovering over a lake at a stately home; the mole in his velvet overcoat with a load of worms hanging out of the pocket; the wonderful use of light- a group of newts quaffing ale by firelight , and the final scene of everyone dancing by greenish glow-worm light.
But best of all has to be the exquisite Esmeralda, Seraphina and Camilla, three caterpillars with accordeon-like bodies and pretty pastel parasols.
A magical book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must on any child's bookshelf 20 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I recently dug out my original copy of this beautiful book which was given to me in 1973 when I was five! My dad worked for the printing company that produced and bound it and managed to get an early copy. I loved this book then, the poetry, the most amazing beautiful prints - my favourite was Old Blind Mole with his pocket-full of worms ....... and I still love this book now, with its tattered spine and that waft of nostalgia smell as I open the pages. What made me dig it back out again was my 13 year old son's interest in art, specifically Todd Schorr - and I wanted to show him the comparison in the artwork. Every kid should have a copy of this beautiful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book 31 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Butterfly Ball & The Grasshoppers Feast is not only a visual treat it is a fantastical story. Alan Aldridge has created something beautiful with words and delightful illustrations that bring the bugs and creepy crawlies to life. You really feel that you are travelling to a maskerade ball with all manner of pleasant bugs!
I've known of this book for over 30 years, having first read it when staying with my stepmother as a child. It captivated me with the color and story. As an adult I had almost forgotten the story but the images stayed in my head. I often thought "I really should buy it as it is such a lovely memory" and have long looked for a copy. My significant other at first thought I was being sentimental until he read it and, like me, has fallen in love with the story and images. So much so, he's taken it to school and read it to his class!
I would recommend it as a purchase for a lovely family heirloom. To own this book is to own a treasure. To be able to pass it down through the generations is something special.
All in all, a terrific purchase and one that has bought a nostalgic warmth back. The seller was terrific and I am so grateful to her for passing the book on so well and in such wonderful condition.

I am 40+ and I remember my dad bringing this book home (I still have the original copy) and the little stories and pictures are amazing. I remember as a child learning Mrs Dormouse and her son to say at school - I loved it so much I can still recite it in full now!!! lovely for preschool and junior school children. My daughter loves it:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper Feast 25 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
This book is to read over and over again. After many years of searching I found it once again.
As I revisited every page, my eyes welled with tears.Every page I turned, a new character on a new adventure.
And nothing compares to the immaculately detailed pictures. The more you look the more you see is an understatement.
Alan Aldridge is truley an artist after any child's and adult heart. Combined with William Plomer, a match made in heaven.
My only wish is, I were on my way to the Ball.
My character, I think is Mr Kingfisher, every word from this page resinated in my heart for over the last 30 years.
Finally the book I longed for in my hands, I shall never let it go again.

Read it,see it. Adult or child. You will not be disappointed.
